My great grandmother was enfranchised due to the colonial policies of the Indian Act because she married a white man. In 1985 under Bill C-31 we were able to regain our Status under the Indian Act and at this time our family went through the process to register as Status Indians. Some members of my family were registered in Elsipogtog First Nation but my ancestors are from Dalhousie NB and when we regained Status we remained living off-reserve in the Dalhousie NB area. Because we were not living on-reserve, in the early 2000’s Indigenous Services Canada began removing us from Elsipogtog and placed us on the General List Atlantic.

I am Mi’gmaq on the General List Atlantic Living in Northern New Brunswick.
