And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28
We were working at home when we first heard the news: “the Porter had a hard landing and has been damaged” quickly followed by the answer to the question already on the tip of our tongues “but Grampa is okay.” The next few hours passed in a daze. This was not in our plans…. a complete 180 from the direction that where we thought we were headed in. God had so clearly provided for this Porter… why this? And why now?
As with many near-death experiences, the next few days and weeks brought a reminder of the fragility of human life, many conversations and reviews of the decisions and situations that led to this point, and a renewed confidence in the sovereignty and goodness of God. We humbled ourselves and once again placed our trust in our perfect Father who has so faithfully led us this far and will continue to for all of our days.
And God began to move just as He always has, bringing good out of difficult situations:
• Duane not only walked out of the Porter completely unharmed, but has been able to use this testimony to share the love of God with others as well.
• The missionary aviation organization (MMS) that is already doing routine maintenance on the Cessna 182 accepted the Porter for repairs without skipping a beat.
• People immediately came together even in the midst of a pandemic to physically help disassemble the Porter and get it moved, as well as get things in place to start raising funds for repairs.
• Upon getting the Porter to MMS, we learned that the man who would be working on our Porter had spent 13 years maintaining Porters in the mission field, a perfect fit for the necessary repairs!
We were able to connect with fellow aviation friends here in Guatemala to fly out food packs to needy families when landslides from two recent hurricanes wiped out houses and bridges, cutting people off from food supplies. We are grateful to have been able to help our fellow Guatemalans during this time, but it was also a grave reminder to us of how ideal the Porter is for these exact types of situations. Thank you to each of you who have prayed and given finances to see this Porter repaired; we look forward to the day it is once again in the air and able to continue to serve the needs of the people of our valley and throughout Guatemala!
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
