Hey , as kids get ready to go back to school you can do a quick eye test at home to see if you need to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor.

A lot of eye diseases don’t show symptoms early on, and they can only be found by an eye doctor.

But an online vision test can help detect changes in vision. To learn what supplies you’ll need and what steps to take, check out this article from the American Academy of Ophthalmology:

Two SITA-Faster Tests per Visit Detects Glaucoma Progression Six Months Earlier
A recent study demonstrated empirical data for the use of frontloaded visual field tests in patients with the early form of the condition.

“Implementing frontloaded visual fields in a glaucoma clinic increased detection of glaucoma progression using mean deviation in comparison to the clinical standard of performing only one test per eye per visit,” the study authors noted.

Novel Systemic Marker Identifies Diabetes Patients at High Risk of DR
Postprandial C-peptide to glucose ratio exhibited a significant association with both mild and moderate NPDR, as well as vision-threatening retinopathy.

“We found that, compared with insulin resistance, the parameters indicative of β-cell function were more related to DR independent of duration of diabetes, HbA1c and some other confounding factors,” the researchers wrote in their paper for Translational Vision Science & Technology. “More importantly,” they continued, “postprandial C-peptide to glucose ratio showed the most significant association with the occurrence and progression of DR, which could act as a promising systemic marker in predicting patients at a high risk of developing DR,” especially vision-threatening presentations.

Fuchs’ Patients May be Helped by Smoking Cessation, Moderating Salt Intake
These and other systemic health factors were analyzed for links with the corneal disease. Cardiovascular and nutritional factors seem to be related, one study finds.

The group of Fuchs’ patients generally had higher rates of cardiovascular diseases, with trends toward significance in congestive heart failure, hypertension and coronary artery disease, while significance was reached with hyperlipidemia and atrial fibrillation. What’s more, the authors of the study point out that the greater sodium intake also observed further suggests a cardiovascular phenotype, since excess sodium consumption is a cardiovascular risk factor. This link with Fuchs’ may be explained by a possible shared mechanism of corneal endothelial dysfunction and systemic vascular health, with sodium potentially exacerbating risks to both systemic and ocular health.

Stargardt Vision Loss is Tied to Age of Symptom Onset
Researchers mapped the course of VA decline but said this metric is too variable for use as a therapeutic trial endpoint.

The authors concluded in their paper that despite visual acuity’s being an unsuitable primary endpoint, knowledge of “age-of-onset dependent trajectories of visual acuity decline will help clinicians counsel their patients.”
