Our goal is to help empower indigenous Mayan midwives around Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, by revaluing and preserving ancestral midwifery through oral history collection and local education programs on ancestral and modernday midwifery practices.

15/07/2025

🔥✨ We’re only at 21% of our year-end goal to keep our Empowerment Through Education Program running for Maya midwives.

These women are rekindling ancient birth knowledge, sacred ceremony, and traditional healing – wisdom that colonization and capitalism continue to threaten.

🧡 Help us reach $5000 by the end of 2025 so Maya midwives can continue to rise as healers, leaders, and wisdom keepers in their communities.

Your donation:
✅ Trains Maya midwives
✅ Preserves ancestral knowledge
✅ Provides each midwife with a Midwifery Kit

🙏🏽 Give if you can. Share to carry this fire forward.

🌿✨ The plants are our teachers & relatives. ✨🌿

In this photo, Maya midwives exchange medicines with reverence and joy. Each leaf, each root carries stories passed down through generations. Their hands know which plants bring warmth to the womb, which calm the spirit, which help birth flow with ease.

These midwives hold a deep relationship with the land. Their knowledge is not written in books but carried in memory, prayer, and practice.

💚 They are inspired to be part of this education program: a place where wisdom keepers gather to share, learn, and ensure this sacred knowledge lives on for generations to come.

🌀 We are so close. 🌀
Your donations have almost fully funded this program: a program powered by you, our community. But we are not there yet.

🌸 Please give today. 🌸
Help us reach our goal so that Maya midwives can continue learning, teaching, and caring for mothers and babies with the medicine of the plants guided by their ancestors.

👩👧✨ Midwifery as a Cultural Path. ✨👩👧

In this photo, a Maya midwife learns life-saving skills (emergency haemorrhage care) side by side with her daughter. Here, knowledge is not only taught in classrooms but passed down through prayers whispered at dawn, through small hands learning to grind herbs, through eyes wide open to the sacred work of birth.

This round, our youngest midwife in training is just 13 years old. During our postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal resuscitation workshops, she showed incredible skill and devotion.

In Guatemala, it is not uncommon for girls to begin attending births alongside their mothers while still children. This is how midwifery wisdom survives. Through generations learning together, each daughter watching, listening, and remembering.

🌸 Midwifery is not just a profession. It is ceremony, family, and ancestral memory. 🌸

🌸✨ Traditional midwifery is ceremony. ✨🌸

Every prayer, every flower laid, every breath of to***co offered… it is all part of how Maya midwives care for mothers and babies. Birth is not just physical... it is spiritual, emotional, and woven with the threads of ancestors.

These midwives hold wisdom carried for generations. Their ceremonies protect life, honour the land, and call in the strength needed for birth.

🌀 Support their sacred work. 🌀

Your donation helps keep these teachings alive and ensures mothers receive care grounded in deep cultural love.

This weekend, we gathered in a circle of shared purpose. Western and Maya midwives, joined by a common devotion to life, birth, and the wisdom that flows through both tradition and science. ✨

Even as we stepped into the clinical, learning tools for neonatal resuscitation and hemorrhage care, we did not step away from the altar. Offerings were still made, prayers still rose, and the teachings of the grandmothers stood beside the protocols of modern medicine.

Traditional methods of emergency care were shared alongside modern techniques, reminding us that both have wisdom. This is the kind of reciprocity The Midwife Project Guatemala is built on. 💜🌿

🔥 Around the sacred fire, we spoke of the placenta:
the first mother, the forgotten guardian.
We grieve what was lost, and celebrate what we are reclaiming.

🪶 Sovereignty begins at birth.
To walk in dignity from first breath to final rest is a right many have lost—but Indigenous communities are remembering the way, lighting the path for us all.

🌀 What part of the life cycle do you long to reclaim, reimagine, or honor more deeply?
