Why pelvic stability is so important 🍃🍃

After birth, many parents are surprised by how much their posture changes. Nearly 80% of people experience back pain during or after pregnancy, and it makes sense when you consider everything the body has been through. The glutes often weaken, hip flexors tighten, and the pelvic floor and core muscles need time to regain strength. At the same time, your uterus is still shrinking, organs are shifting back into place, your body may still be bleeding for several weeks, and your breasts may feel heavier and more sensitive. Add in frequent feeding, lifting, and carrying your baby, and it’s easy for the body to fall into patterns that strain the back and neck.

This is where gentle postpartum yoga and mindful movement can be so supportive. Many new parents find themselves hunching forward to breastfeed, carrying babies on one hip, or walking with slumped shoulders and a forward head, all common parts of what’s often called postpartum posture.

Simple yoga-based stretches and strengthening exercises can help reconnect with the core and pelvic floor, open the chest and shoulders, and bring the body back into better alignment over time. At Awakened Spirit Yoga we always remind teachers that healing takes time, small, supportive movements and body awareness can make a big difference during the postpartum months.

World Doula Week is a moment to honour the quiet, powerful work of holding space.

As yoga teachers, we practice presence, breath, and trust in the body’s wisdom. In birthwork, doulas do something very similar, We both invite people to turn inward, to listen deeply, and to move through transformation with support rather than force.

Through our sister organization Doula School, we have been able to experience the natural symmetry between doula care and pre- and postnatal yoga: meeting people where they are, adapting to the moment, and creating safety through calm, consistent presence.

This week, we celebrate doulas and yoga practitioners who support families through some of life’s most profound transitions, reminding us that care, breath, and embodied support change everything.

If you’ve ever considered training as a doula, visit DoulaSchool.com to learn more about the available programs.

International Women’s Day is a moment to honor the women who move through the world with intention, care, and quiet strength, on and off the mat. Here at ASY we witness what happens when women give themselves permission to slow down, to breathe deeply, and to take up space in their bodies without apology.

Yoga teaches us that strength doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. It can look like softness, rest, boundaries, and presence. Every time a woman chooses to listen to her body, trust her intuition, or teach from a place of authenticity, she’s practicing a kind of leadership the world deeply needs.

Today, we celebrate women like you who teach, practice, hold space, and continue to rise. With yoga teachings rooted in breath and grounded in purpose, and connected to something far bigger than themselves.

Happy International Women’s Day.

I think a real breakthrough for me as a yogi happened when I truly learned to listen to my breath. It allowed my body to stop feeling like it was something to control and started feeling like something to trust.

That moment changed everything for me. Yoga stopped being about perfect poses and started becoming a practice of relationship, between my breath, body, and nervous system. The inhale became a cue to soften. The exhale, an invitation to let go. Instead of forcing alignment, I learned to feel it from the inside out.

There’s something quietly radical about trusting your body in a world that tells us to override it. Listening to the breath is a return to something ancient and intuitive. A reminder that your body isn’t a project to fix. When you slow down enough to hear it, wisdom shows up naturally. It’s a teaching we keep in mind everyday at Awakened Spirit Yoga.

🪶🪶Rumi’s The Guest House reminds us that being human means being in constant relationship with change.

Emotions arrive without invitation, joy, grief, shame, clarity, each knocking at the door of our inner world. Rather than resisting or judging what shows up, the poem invites us to meet every experience with curiosity and respect.
In yoga and mindfulness, we practice this same truth: noticing what’s present in the body and breath without pushing it away. Even the uncomfortable guests have something to teach us. This poem asks us to trust that every feeling, every moment of awareness, is part of our becoming, clearing space, shaping us, guiding us toward deeper understanding and compassion.

Blog Post 📝📝

Mindfulness is often defined as present-moment awareness of thoughts, emotions, body sensations and surroundings through a gentle lens.

The practice of mindfulness is paying attention to thoughts, feelings and physical sensations without judgement, without labelling them “right” or “wrong.” Tuning into the present moment just as it is; not rehashing the past or fantasizing about the future. Just being here and now.

We practice mindfulness to hold all that is arising in a loving awareness that nurtures and allows. In this way, mindfulness becomes heartfulness, and we become more friendly with the inner world and less reactive to the outer world. We can reduce stress and, according to neuroscience, amplify a sense of contentment and happiness.

✅What is Meditation?

Meditation is a mental training that awakens us beyond the conditioned mind and habitual thought patterns, ultimately revealing the true nature of reality. According to Tara Brach, “The process and the fruit of meditation practice is understood as Natural Presence. Presence is a mindful, clear recognition of what is happening—here, now—and the open, allowing space that includes all experience.”

This Black History Month, here at ASY we honor the wisdom, resilience, and creativity carried through the Black community across generations. Past generations understood balance, breath, rhythm, and rest as essential to connection and wholeness.

Yoga invites us into that same practice of remembrance: honoring the body as a keeper of wisdom, breath as a tool for regulation, and rest as a necessary act of dignity. This Black History Month, we pause to acknowledge the deep connection between liberation and well-being, and to commit to practices that support healing, presence, and wholeness for Black lives on and off the mat.🖤

🩵 Bell Let’s Talk Day 🩵

We join the conversation around mental health, a conversation that asks us to show up with honesty, empathy, and a willingness to truly listen. At Awakened Spirit Yoga, we believe that tending to our inner world is an essential part of personal transformation and conscious leadership.

Yoga offers us tools that support mental wellbeing in meaningful, embodied ways:
🌿 Breath that calms the nervous system
🌿 Movement that releases stored tension
🌿 Stillness that helps us witness our thoughts without judgment
🌿 Community that reminds us we are not alone

On Day we pause to acknowledge that mental health is not a solitary journey. It’s supported by connection, by open conversations, and by practices that help us return to ourselves with compassion.

As educators and space-holders, we are committed to fostering environments in our trainings, retreats, and global community where emotional wellbeing is honored and openly discussed. Healing happens when we feel safe enough to be seen, heard, and supported.

Your mental health matters. Your story matters.
With love,

🌿Affirmation of the Week🌿

“My body is my teacher, and I listen with compassion.”

At Awakened Spirit Yoga, we believe that every transformative journey begins by tuning into the wisdom already living within us. Your body holds stories, lessons, and truths that no textbook or external voice can replace and when we listen with compassion, we open the door to deeper alignment, healing, and embodied understanding.

In our trainings and retreats, we invite students to slow down, notice, and honor the subtle messages that arise through breath, movement, and stillness. This is the foundation of mindful leadership: learning to trust your inner compass so you can guide others from a place of authenticity and care.

As you step onto your mat this week, may you soften into presence. May you honor your body’s boundaries, celebrate its strengths, and meet its needs with patience and love.

With gratitude for your ongoing journey,
Awakened Spirit Yoga 🌿
