August is Appendix Cancer Awareness Month 🎗

Appendix cancer is rare—affecting only about 1–2 people per million each year—but cases are on the rise, especially among younger generations. 💛

Most cases of appendix cancer are discovered after a person was thought to have appendicitis which usually results in the removal of the appendix. Knowing the symptoms - such as abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, feeling full soon after eating, and changes in bowel habits - can help lead to an earlier diagnosis. This gives more options for treatment and overall a better outcome for a person's health.

There is no specific cancer screening for the appendix, which is why it is crucial to get your annual physical done and be an advocate for your body. Bring up concerns to your doctor and monitor yourself. When in doubt, check it out!

July is Sarcoma & Bone Cancer Awareness Month 💛

Sarcoma and bone cancer are rare, but they can affect people of all ages—including those here on Guam. According to the National Cancer Institute, sarcomas are cancers that begin in the bones and soft tissues and often go undetected until advanced stages. Early signs like persistent pain, swelling, or a lump should never be ignored.

On an island where access to specialists can be limited, early detection is our best defense. If something doesn’t feel right, see your doctor and ask questions. When in doubt, check it out!
