World Su***de Prevention day
Every life matters!!

“Changing the narrative on su***de”

Each year, an estimated 720,000 people die by su***de worldwide — with devastating and far-reaching impacts on families, friends, workplaces, and communities, highlighting the urgent need for prevention, support, and systemic change.
On 10 September 2025, people and organisations across the world will unite to mark World Su***de Prevention Day (WSPD) under the triennial theme “Changing the Narrative on Su***de”. This year, particular focus is being placed on accessibility, with resources translated into more languages to ensure the campaign can reach and engage communities around the world.

Changing the narrative on su***de is about transforming silence, stigma, and misunderstanding into openness, empathy, and support. It is about encouraging individuals, communities, organisations, and governments to act with the following key messages:
* Awareness & Understanding: Talk openly and compassionately about su***de, challenging myths and breaking down stigma.
* Policy: Advocate for the decriminalisation of su***de and the development of national su***de prevention strategies.
* Action: Take part in training, share stories, and check in with loved ones.
* Conflict Areas: Ensure those affected by crisis and instability have access to mental health care and protective support.
World Su***de Prevention Day was established in 2003 by the International Association for Su***de Prevention (IASP) in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO). It provides a powerful opportunity every year to raise awareness, foster understanding, and inspire action.
Everyone has a role to play. From individuals checking in with loved ones, to communities creating safe spaces, to governments enacting policies and allocating resources — together, we can change the narrative and work towards a world where su***de is prevented, and every life is valued.

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils — the two oval-shaped pads of lymphoid tissue at the back of your throat — usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection.

Here’s a clear breakdown:

1. Causes
• Viral infections (most common): e.g., adenovirus, rhinovirus, influenza, Epstein–Barr virus.
• Bacterial infections: most often Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep).

2. Symptoms
• Sore throat (often severe)
• Difficulty swallowing
• Swollen, red tonsils (sometimes with white or yellow patches)
• Fever
• Bad breath
• Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
• Hoarse voice or muffled speech
• In children: refusal to eat, irritability

3. Diagnosis
• Physical exam of throat and lymph nodes
• Throat swab for rapid strep test or culture to check for Streptococcus
• Blood tests if needed (e.g., to rule out mononucleosis)

4. Treatment
Depends on cause:
• Viral: Symptomatic relief (rest, fluids, warm saline gargles, throat lozenges, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain/fever).
• Bacterial: Antibiotics

Impacted earwax, also known as cerumen impaction, is a buildup of earwax in the ear canal that can cause hearing loss, ear pain, and other symptoms. It occurs when the earwax doesn't naturally migrate out of the ear and instead accumulates, potentially blocking the ear canal.

What is earwax?
Earwax, or cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal.
It helps protect the ear canal by trapping dust, debris, and other foreign substances.
It also lubricates the ear canal and helps prevent infections.

What causes impaction?

Self-inflicted:
Using cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other objects to clean the ears can push earwax further into the ear canal, leading to impaction.

Anatomical:
Some individuals may have narrow or winding ear canals, making it difficult for the earwax to naturally exit.

Increased production:
Certain conditions or medications can cause the body to produce more earwax than usual, increasing the risk of impaction.

Age:
Older adults are more prone to earwax impaction due to the hardening and slower movement of earwax as they age.
Hearing aids or earplugs:
These devices can block the natural migration of earwax, causing it to build up.

Symptoms of impacted earwax:
Hearing loss.
Earache or pain.
A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear.
Itching in the ear.
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
Dizziness or vertigo.
Coughing.

Treatment for impacted earwax:
Over-the-counter ear drops:
Earwax softening drops (such as those containing carbamide peroxide) can help loosen the wax, making it easier to remove.
Irrigation:

A doctor or nurse can use a syringe and warm water or saline solution to flush out the earwax.
Manual removal:

A doctor can use special tools to gently remove the wax, or use suction.

Professional removal:
If over-the-counter treatments are not effective, a doctor or audiologist can safely remove the impacted earwax.

Our clinic is more that happy to assist you with treatment and procedures relating to impacted wax.
