Sharing my answer to a question about drugs and memory loss.
There is significant damage to the memory center for learning, by alcohol. Ma*****na also affects memory negatively. The benzos like va**um librium and others in that class causes memory suppression. Apart from dugs other common problems may affect memory including poor nutrition, lack of sleep especially dream sleep, depression, stress and anxiety.

I received this question "What causes memory loss?
Ans: Ageing would be a common cause for gradual memory loss. However if there is no underlying pathology like a vascular disorder or Alzheimers, this memory loss does not affect function or judgment.
I would recommend a physical and neuro examination for evaluating memory loss to determine if it can be stopped or reversed. Some conditions like vitamin deficiencies, NPH and depression can cause memory loss which can be stopped with treatment. Low level laser therapy can help if Alzheimers has not progressed. For all memory problems, exercising the memory center, right nutrition and supplements are also good.
