Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD)
Not dangerous — but definitely contagious!

What is it?
A viral illness (usually coxsackievirus) that mostly hits kids under 5 — but adults aren’t immune! Spreads fast in daycares, schools, and homes.

Signs & Symptoms:
• Fever 🌡️
• Painful mouth sores 👄
• Blister-like rash on hands & feet ✋🦶
• Sore throat, decreased appetite, irritability 😖

How we treat it (in the ER):
• No antivirals — it’s all supportive care 🩺
• Pain/fever control with acetaminophen or ibuprofen 💊
• Encourage fluids — dehydration is the biggest risk! 💧
• Soft, cold foods help soothe the mouth 🍦

Contagious for up to a week — keep sick kids home!
Handwashing is your best defense 🧼
