Explained by expert on Selective Mutism that each child with SM has his/her own set of rules in communication and the intervention is to change such rules to encourage verbal communication.

First day listening to the expert on Selective Mutism and realised that each SM child has won set of rules in communication and it is important to teach him/her how to override his/her own rules through behavioural therapy.

During the first meeting with an expert in Selective Mutism, she suggested that we should try asking choice question to encourage a response from a child. For example, rather that asking an open question "what colour do you like?" ask instead "do you like red, blue or some other colour?" and then wait for an answer even for up to 10 seconds as this encourages the child to say something out of the choices given.

Try it and do not give up even it does not work on your SM child first few times.

Selective Mutism - a term that I have heard of only over the last year and I am looking forward to learn and share more as I am going to Washington DC to meet two experts on this psychological disorder that is affecting the development of many children. Looking forward to share more later.
