The "Secret Formula" of Write Dance

Ever wonder what’s actually happening in a child’s brain when they do Write Dance? 🧠✨ It’s not just dancing—it’s Sensory Instructional Scaffolding!

Our Write Dance course teaches you how to combine these key elements to build confident writers:
📖 Story & Visuals: Engaging the imagination.
🥁 Rhythm & Movement: Waking up the body.
🎨 Tactile Play: Getting hands-on.
✍️ Scrimbling: The bridge between scribbling and writing!

Ready to learn the method behind the movement?
Pay attention to our next Write Dance Course!

We often look at a child (or even ourselves!) who is zoning out, fidgeting, or tripping over their own feet and label it as "clumsy" or "unfocused." We think the problem is in the attention span.

But what if the problem is actually in the foundation?

In Sensory Integration theory, our "foundation" consists of three main hidden senses:

1️⃣ Vestibular: Our sense of balance and where our head is in space.
2️⃣ Proprioception: Our body awareness (knowing where our limbs are without looking).
3️⃣ Tactile: Our sense of touch.

If these systems are "wobbly"—meaning the brain isn't processing the input correctly.

That leaves problems such as:
❌ Paying attention
❌ Reading social cues
❌ Learning new concepts

When the foundation is unstable, the mind has to be absent. It’s too busy trying to process information correctly.

Before we ask them to "focus harder," let's check if their sensory foundation is solid.

Snack time is actually fine motor therapy in disguise! 🥣✨

As adults, we open a yogurt tub without thinking. But for our kiddos, this simple task is a massive test of hand skills.

Based on packaging research by Javier de la Fuente, let’s put on our OT goggles 🥽 and do a Movement Analysis of what those little hands are actually doing during the "Yogurt Challenge."

It’s not just "pulling"—it’s a complex sequence:

1️⃣ Bilateral Coordination: First, the "Helper Hand" must hold the tub steady (isometric contraction) so it doesn't slide away. Meanwhile, the "Worker Hand" uses a pincer grasp to locate that tiny tab.

2️⃣ Grading Force: To break the seal, the fingers must transition from a delicate pinch to a strong pull. This requires proprioception—knowing exactly how much force to use so they don't rip the tab off!

3️⃣ Hand Separation (The Critical Step): This is where many kids struggle! As they peel the lid, the hand has to divide its duties. The ulnar fingers (pinky and ring finger) must rest against the tub to stabilize the hand. This anchor allows the first three fingers (thumb, index, middle) to do the skilled work of peeling the lid back with control.

Why does this matter? 🧩
We call this "Ulnar Stability for Radial Mobility." If a child hasn't developed this separation, they might try to peel using their whole arm or shoulder, leading to spills and frustration.

Next time you see a struggle at snack time, look at the pinky finger. Is it anchoring the hand, or is it flying in the air? 🖐️
