Dry eye syndrome is a common eye condition that affects a significant portion of the population. Many individuals are told that their symptoms are normal or that nothing can be done, leading them to believe that artificial tears are their only option as a symptoms relief. However, several effective home remedies exist to improve dry eye symptoms.

乾眼症是一種影響不少人的常見眼疾。許多人被告知他們的症狀是正常的或是無法改善，令他們誤以為人工淚液是唯一的緩解選擇。然而，實際上還有幾種有效的居家護理可以改善受乾眼症。

Dry eye is a multifactorial condition that can arise from factors causing inadequate tear production or poor tear quality, resulting in 3 types of dry eyes:

• Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye
• Evaporative Dry Eye
• Mixed Dry Eye

✨Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye (ADDE)✨
• Occurs when there is not enough water in the tears, often due to inflammation or reduced tear production

✨Evaporative Dry Eye (EDE)✨
• This is the most common type of dry eye and happens when the oily layer of tears is damaged or not sufficient to prevent rapid evaporation.

✨Mixed Dry Eye (MDE)✨
• Occurs when there is a lack of both water and oil in the tears, resulting in poor-quality tears.

The tear film may be a small part of the eye, but it is definitely important and should not be ignored. ❗️Without a healthy and functioning tear film, our eyes can be susceptible to various infections, discomfort, and vision issues.

What Is Tear Film❓

It consists of 3 layers:
• Outermost - The lipid layer (oil)
• Middle - The aqueous layer (water)
• Innermost - The mucin layer (mucus)

Why Is Tear Film Important❓

These layers work together:
• To keep the eyes moist
• To protect the eyes against irritants and infections
• To allow light to enter the eyes properly for clear vision

How is Tear Film related to Dry Eye❓

An imbalance in the tear film can lead to dry eye,
causing symptoms like:
• Burning sensation
• Grittiness
• Red eyes
• Watery eyes
• Blurry vision
• Increase sensitivity to light

Maintaining a healthy tear film is essential to prevent discomfort and vision problems, emphasising the need for proper eye care and treatment if issues arise.👁️🔍

【Some useful tips for preventing myopia!】

Children in Hong Kong are generally faced with loads of homework, and due to the pandemic, they are spending more time than ever reading or watching materials or things from a short distance. What should one do to prevent children from getting myopia? Apart from reminding children to keep a suitable distance and good posture, you may refer to the following tips:

*Prevention is better than cure: spending 90 minutes on outdoor exercise every day helps delaying/preventing myopia

*Early assessment and treatment: bringing children to regular comprehensive eye check and myopia assessment, such that you have a good grasp of the status of your children’s eyesight
