🌟 Understanding Spinal Curves: A Paediatric Physio’s Guide to Healthy Backs! 🌟

Is your child’s posture looking uneven? As a paediatric physio, I use the Schroth Method to promote healthy alignment.

1️⃣ Kyphosis (Rounded Upper Back)
→ Can cause shoulder/neck strain
→ Improved with thoracic extension exercises

2️⃣ Lordosis (Excessive Lower Back Curve)
→ Often linked to weak core muscles
→ Managed with pelvic tilts & core activation

3️⃣ Scoliosis (Sideways Curve)
→ Requires 3D posture training (Schroth Method)
→ Custom exercises to de-rotate & elongate the spine

Why It Matters in HK:
📚 Heavy school bags & long study hours can worsen posture
💺 Desk-bound lifestyles increase spinal stress

A quick primer on !

1️⃣ 𝗗𝗬𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗖 warm ups are best before exercise - to actively prime your muscles and joints, and raise your core body temperature.

2️⃣ 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗖 stretching are best performed when you're not exercising, or after your workout. The aim of static stretching is to increase flexibility, and prevent post-exercise stiffness.

That said, static stretching still has a role to play before exercise, especially if you have very stiff joints and muscles.

💡 If you add static stretching as part of your warm-up, hold the stretch for 15-30 seconds only, not 60 seconds or longer.

Let's Strengthen Your Soleus Muscles🏃

The calves are primarily composed of two muscles: the gastrocnemius, which is the most visible part of the calves, and the soleus, a smaller muscle located underneath the gastrocnemius. While the gastrocnemius often takes the spotlight, it's important not to overlook the soleus!

A targeted strengthening program for the soleus can help improve running economy. By strengthening the soleus muscles, runners can enhance their efficiency and potentially run faster. Stronger muscles are also more injury proof!

If you'd like to start strengthening the soleus, try these exercises shared by our physiotherapist Wesley Ma! ⭐
