From my professional and personal experience this is absolutely true! So make sure sleep is a priority for your little one to ensure maximum happiness ❤️ It may sound boring, but routine routine routine is key for your little ones when it comes to sleep 💤

Most parents know that sleep is important for children’s wellbeing. Adults, and parents in particular, generally value sleep and know too well the way it affects our own emotional wellbeing when we don’t get enough sleep. But how important is sleep to your child’s happiness? The 2017 BTN Happi...

Like adults, babies need plenty of natural light in the daytime to help them sleep well at night. Light after all is the main regulator of our body clock ⏰ ⁣

If you are able to get outside and spend some time surrounded by nature - even better. The sound of birds singing and the sight of trees swaying in the breeze in an instant calmer for babies and adults alike! 🌿⁣

Babies are easily over stimulated and we often feel a constant need to entertain them with toys, songs and endless clapping, but sometimes it is all about being calm and observing.⁣

This morning I was lucky enough to get my yoga mat out and do some stretches under the palm trees whilst Seb sat quietly in ore of the nature surrounding him. 🌸⁣

Namaste 🙏🏻

I’m very excited to be back consulting after maternity leave. Meet Sebastian, my pride and joy. He has given me the opportunity to put my 15 years of training and experience into practice, and thank goodness it worked 🙌🏼 ⁣

I’ve always been confident in what I do, but there was always a slight concern that I would have a baby who I wouldn’t be able to get to sleep 😳. ⁣

Of course things can still change, but I truely believe that if you get your baby into good habits from early on, it will be a much quicker and smoother road to good sleep 🥰

Let's talk sleep during pregnancy. There is no doubt that sleep during pregnancy is tough, I am well into my third trimester now and sleep is getting harder and harder.⁣

Many say it's nature's way of preparing you for the broken sleep to come once your little one arrives which may be true. However, if there is one thing we can do to get better quality sleep at this stage it is to have a regular wake up time, get outside and get plenty of natural light, and do some form of gentle exercise that you enjoy (that along with the fortress of pillows). ⁣

For me this morning it was pilates in the garden. The stretches felt amazing for my achey hips and the strengthening elements will go a long way to help reduce further discomfort and prepare me for childbirth.⁣

Self love and care will help give you both mental and physical strength when it comes to looking after the teeny tiny human you are soon to meet 🙏❤️

An interesting read on the variation of baby and infant sleep practices around the world.

One thing that remains pretty consistent wherever you are is the need for a good bedtime routine..

Around the world, there are drastic differences in children's bedtimes and what parents do to make bedtime easier. Here's a look at how parents tackle bedtime.

As your newborn starts to settle in to some sort of rhythm with their naps and wake windows, it is a good idea to try to feed after they wake from their nap, rather than directly before their nap, and then have some play time. By doing things in this order, eat, play, sleep rather than play, eat, sleep, you prevent building a strong ‘feed to sleep’ association. ⁣

As babies get older and all they have known it being fed to sleep, they require this each time they wake at night to return to sleep, as a comforter, even if they actually don’t need a feed. ⁣

‘Feed to sleep’ is the strongest negative sleep association that a baby can develop and it can be tricky to break once they have developed it. So this is good to bear in mind from a young age.⁣

Instead, try introducing a positive sleep association such as a little comforter they only have when they nap, or some white noise or shushing sounds. ⁣

Remember that whatever a baby gets used to as they fall asleep, they will require to feel comforted going forward as this is generally all they have known and learnt, so having something that doesn’t always involve your presence means when the time is right they will learn to fall to sleep independently with ease including when they wake up in the night between sleep cycles - meaning more sleep for you and them ❤️ 👶🏼 💤

Between the age of 4-6 months, many parents may decide that their little one is ready to start adding some solid food to their existing milk diet. ⁣

The good news is, that once a baby is happily established on some solids, they are often able to sleep for longer periods at night, giving you some much needed extra shut eye!⁣

What we eat significantly impacts our ability to sleep, both as babies and adults, due to the key role that nutrients play in controlling our hormones, and our hormones play a major part in controlling our sleep-wake cycle. ⁣

Puréed sweet potato is a great food to help your baby with sleep. Not only does it keep their little tummy full up due to its complex carbohydrate nature, but it contains high levels of Tryptophan, which, once digested is converted into 5-HTP, an amino acid which is an essential component required to make Melatonin, our sleep hormone!⁣

Puréed sweet potato is a perfect starter food when introducing your baby to solids, most babies love it due to its nafurally sweet flavour, meaning it doesn’t taste too dissimilar from the breast or formula milk which is all they have known until now. ⁣

Of course, if your baby is not a great sleeper, introducing sweet potato isn’t a magic fix! But along with teaching them good sleep habits, and starting to eliminate negative sleep associations, this can really help. ⁣

Go get blending! 🍠🙌🏼💤 ⁣

⁣⁣
Did you know that light is the single most powerful influencer on our sleep-wake rhythm due to special sensors in our eyes that connect to the brain?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
These sensors are especially sensitive to blue light, which we need plenty of in the mornings to help align our body clock, let our brain know that it’s daytime and to energise us. This includes natural day light, but you can also buy bright light bulbs and dawn simulator lamps/alarm clocks for those dark winter mornings. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In the evenings, only use lamps with a warm yellowish light, and turn all electronic devices to night mode to reduce the amount of blue light emitted. ⁣Blue light in the evenings confuses our brain and it prevents our Melatonin (sleep hormone) from being released properly.⁣
⁣⁣
Aim for maximising bright light exposure during the first 3-4 hours of your little one’s day by walking outside, sitting near windows or using bright lighting indoors, and minimising blue light during the last 3-4 hours before bed. ⁣To make it even more effective, the timing of the light exposure in the morning should be kept regular every single day. ⁣

This is especially important for babies and children to set them up for healthy sleep patterns into later life 💡😊☀️🙌🏼💤⁣
