This post is for all the parents ⤵️

And yet we know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

We see so many accurate, moving quotes about motherhood that make us think: ”I bet many fathers could relate to this too”

The last thing we want to do here is discredit mothers or deny that many challenges are unique to mothers and birthing parents.

It’s a reality that in many societies, mothers carry a larger invisible load - there’s no denying it.

But isn’t that something we want to change?

Our message is this:

✨Let’s acknowledge that all parents are worthy of admiration and support

✨Many mothers are creating great, supportive conversations and communities online - let’s leave the door open for dads who may relate

✨Let’s speak more often about the challenges and experiences that unite (rather than divide) us

Wouldn’t we all be better off if we get better at parenting as a team?

What’s more important than the perfect birth plan?

Walking in with an open mind ✨

The way we see it, preparing for birth should go beyond informing yourself and planning your ideal birth.

It should also include…

✨working on a flexible mindset
✨discussing your worries and preferences with your partner
✨building a support team you feel at ease with

How else would you prepare if you were to go through it again?

A few things have changed around here, so I thought it’s time to (re)introduce myself!⤵️

👋I’m Sofie Jacobs - a coach, midwife, & founder of two businesses: Urban Hatch (a childbirth education platform) and Moments that Matter (a provider of employee wellbeing & inclusion programmes to Fortune 500 companies)

A bit more about me, so you know where the educational content I share on this account comes from!

👶🏻My career started in midwifery 25y ago with international roles in public & private healthcare. I’ve delivered hundreds of babies and supported families pre, during and post-birth across Europe & Asia.

🤰I created to take the type of perinatal support I believe in (inclusive, non-judgemental, holistic) online with virtual consultations and a digital prenatal course

I was happy to be supporting expectant and new parents at home. But who was supporting them at work? And what about other life transitions, life grief and midlife shifts?

💼Seeing the dire need for better workplace support, I created Moments that Matter - a firm that offers coaching & employee wellbeing programmes to several Fortune 500 & Global 500 companies

🗣️ As a corporate coach, I’m often delivering knowledge-sharing sessions in front of hundreds of people, or more intimate group-coaching sessions, on topics such as returning to work after parental leave and optimising your wellbeing as a busy caregiver

💛 As a private coach, I work with new/expectant parents struggling with: returning to work after parental leave, getting back in charge of their mental & physical wellbeing, setting healthier work/life boundaries, post-baby relationship challenges, and more

🌊 As a wellbeing entrepreneur, I try to practice what I preach and work on creating & maintaining balance. When I’m not working, I try to do what recharges me: spend time on the trails, near the ocean & with my husband & friends

🤳On this account, I want to focus on bringing a coaching angle to the journey of becoming a (working) parent! 💭By sharing thought-provoking questions, reframes and practical tips

➡️Now tell me about you! What brings you here? What would you like to see more of? Thanks for being here!

Double tap if you had a hands-on birth partner!🙌🏽

Some ways to help out as a labour partner:

✅ massage and light touch to help her cope with the pain of contractions

✅ remind her to empty her bladder regularly (this makes room for baby to descend!)

✅ hold a warm flannel on her perineum in the pushing phase (this can help reduce the risk of tearing)

✅ if the medical team suggests anything that wasn’t foreseen, ask the right questions. In our prenatal course we walk you through a formula so you know exactly which 5 questions to ask.

✅ remember more isn’t necessarily more. Many birthing moms turn inwards during labour and the best you can give them is the comfort of your calm, steady presence.

How did your partner get involved?

📌 Check out our online prenatal course Hatch if you want to have (or want to be) a supportive birth partner!

Some ways to a supportive labour partner:

✅if the medical team suggests anything that wasn’t foreseen, ask the right questions. In our course we suggest using the BRAND formula: ask about the Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, what happens if you decide Not to do it, and make a Decision.

✅be a calming presence and give her space (it’s very common for women to turn inwards when giving birth)
