Did you know that the sciatic nerve is the widest and longest nerve in your body? It starts in the lower back, runs through the buttock, extends down the back of the leg and then branches into smaller nerves that supply the leg, ankle, and foot! Since the nerve is so long and wide it is one of the most common nerves to get compressed and pinched! 🧐

Symptoms of sciatica include:

1️⃣ Pain: Coughing, sneezing, bending, or lifting your legs upward while lying on your back can trigger sciatic pain due to increased pressure on the affected nerve.

2️⃣ Tingling: Similar to the sensation of a leg falling asleep when sitting cross-legged.

3️⃣ Numbness: Inability to feel sensations in the affected areas of the back or leg.

4️⃣ Muscle weakness: Difficulty in muscle command signals reaching their intended destinations in the back or legs.

5️⃣ Urinary or f***l incontinence: A severe symptom indicating a disruption in signals controlling bladder and bowel functions.

What can you do to help with sciatica?

✅ Continue with your normal activities as much as possible. Be aware of your posture and try to avoid heavy lifting and too much bending and twisting.
✅ Engage in regular exercises specifically for sciatica: such as raising your knees to your chest and sciatic nerve threading.
✅ Apply ice packs to the painful areas (consult your chiropractor for guidance).
✅ Place a small, firm cushion between your knees when sleeping on your side.
