Life is full of ups and downs, we know that. But it still hurts when hard time hits. We are frustrated, resentful, and exhausted.
So how can we pick ourselves up when things get tough?
In the last post, I shared the importance of processing emotions and expressing them in a healthy way. Let’s talk about 2 other tips to help us get through challenging times:
2️⃣Accept the Reality, and Focus on What You Can Control
We often get fixated on what we wish the situation will be, rather than perceiving reality as it is.
We ruminate on how our lives would be different if the adversity had not happened, or have false hopes that people would somehow change.
The unrealistic expectations and the struggle with reality leave us disappointed, angry, and frustrated. It adds further suffering to the already painful situation.
We don’t have to like whatever that we are accepting. Accepting reality also does not mean tolerating or allowing ourselves to be stuck in the situation forever.
Acceptance is accurately assessing and adapting to the circumstance.
Although some things are out of our control (which we should not waste our energy worrying about because doing that won’t affect the outcome), we can always focus on what’s within our control, such as investing in ourselves, cutting off toxic relationships, or applying for a new job.
3️⃣Take Baby Steps to Regain Momentum
Emotion, thinking, and behavior are all interlinked: When we’re down, we tend to think negatively and doubt ourselves; we are drained and don’t feel like doing anything. We blame ourselves for the lack of motivation, and in turn, become more depressed.
It’s hard to get back on track when we are trapped in this vicious cycle.
To break this cycle and rebuild momentum, we can aim at accomplishing small goals every day, such as reading a chapter of a book, going out for a jog, or tidying up the room.
The key is to build on small victories, and gradually regain motivation and self-confidence so that we can bounce back.
Last but not least, whatever setbacks or roadblocks you are facing now, have faith that you will overcome them and come out stronger on the other side.
