謝謝!Professor Jack Michael
It is with very deep sorrow that we share with you that yesterday, Dr. Jack Michael passed away quietly and peacefully. Jack was Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at Western Michigan University, having taught here from 1967 through 2003. Jack was born January 16, 1926 and was, thus, 94 years old when he passed.
Jack was very well known for his many and deep contributions to the field of behavior analysis. His 1959 paper with Ted Ayllon (The Psychiatric Nurse as a Behavioral Engineer) was one of the first papers to demonstrate the application of behavior analytic principles to human behavior in a socially valid context. Jack also made important contributions to the field in molecular and conceptual analysis of behavior. Jack was regarded as a dedicated and excellent teacher. His skills in designing instruction effectively have been long renowned and imitated by many in the field. Equally important, Jack was known to many as a friend—funny, happy, a great dancer, a wine lover, and a vociferous advocate of all things radical behavior analysis, Skinner, and Keller.
Jack’s death is a significant loss to the field, WMU’s Department of Psychology, and to many, personally. We will follow up later with a more detailed tribute, but we wanted to make our community aware of this sad news. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the Jack Michael Endowed Scholarship Fund, a scholarship designed to fund graduate students in their study of verbal behavior and/or conceptual and molecular behavior analysis (https://wmualumni.org/JackMichaelFund) or a contribution to a charity that honors Jack’s legacy.
Please keep our good friend and colleague, Dr. Alyce Dickinson (also Professor Emeritus from the Department of Psychology at Western Michigan University), Jack’s wife, in your thoughts as well. We are surrounding her with strength and support. If you wish to express your condolences, feel free to comment and we'll be sure to pass your words along to her since she does not have a Facebook account.
The world lost an amazing man!
