Combat Colorectal Cancer in Younger Individuals
Colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer globally and the second most common in Hong Kong, accounts for about 10% of all cancer cases worldwide and 15.3% of new cases in Hong Kong. Although highly preventable, its prevention methods are frequently neglected. While it mainly affects people aged 50 and above, there's a rising incidence among younger adults, necessitating a reevaluation of screening guidelines.
The specific reasons why many individuals under age 50 (some as young as age 30) are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer remain unclear. However, research indicates that approximately 20% of these patients have an inherited genetic mutation that contributes to their cancer. Family history also plays a role in some cases, but scientists are still investigating the factors responsible for the remainder of the group.
Lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption contribute to colorectal cancer. Early detection through regular screenings greatly improves survival rates. Adopting a healthy lifestyle and undergoing regular screenings can significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
Modern life, characterized by unhealthy dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, stress, and genetic factors, increases the risk of colorectal cancer. These often overlooked threats underscore the critical importance of early detection.
