FIRST AID FOR SNAKE BITES: Pressure Immobilization Bandage (PIT)

A quick how to guide to emergency preparedness.

- During the cycle of care whilst waiting for professional medics to arrive, the PIT technique should be applied to the injured patient- to slow the spread of venom
- Place pressure on the wound and use sterile gloves, padding etc., to apply aid. A split should also be administered to the limb during this period
- Contact a local poison centre for further directions assisted by arrival of medics to the scene
- There’s usually a 4 step procedure involving the immobilisation bandage application. The steps are summarized as follows;

Snakes Bites

Did you know that Hong Kong biodiversity list 14 venomous land snakes that are indigenous to our island state? It’s said that Bamboo (white-lipped spit viper) snakes are responsible for 90% of all snake bites in Hong Kong.

EFR aid protocols suggest the following under our primary care unit in treating a snake bite;
- Assess if the incident was from a venomous snake – nearby
- Think of surrounding safety protocol and action plan
- Check responsiveness of patient and alert emergency personnel - as all snake bites should be treated as lethal regardless of circumstances
- If you can; a pressure immobilization bandage should be applied following routine steps for field treatment

Venomous bites are identified as: fang marks with pain; swelling (redness) and skin discoloration around the wound area. An allergic reactions (hives) may occur, with patients showing following symptoms but not limited to:
- Nausea
- Blurred vision
- Tingling around face or mouth
- Rapid pulse and or develop a fever
- Be aware symptoms may not occur until an hour after the initial trauma

It’s important to remember to wear appropriate outdoor shoes (over the ankles), stay alert and pack our first aid kit along in-case of prolonged outdoor activities – for the unexpected!

Hopefully there are no EGGISTENTIAL crisis that go down in the long weekend ahead. We don't want anyone cracking up in need of aid. On that note; lettuce pray and count our eggs harefully. Happy hunting!

We’ve all heard the term but what does “CPR” stand for and what are the EFR protocols around it?

C- cardio (heart)
P- pulmonary (concerns the lung & breathing)
R- resuscitation (reviving from unconsciousness)
The protocol is a two-step maneuver by:
1. Chest compressions and …
2. Rescue breaths (mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-mask). This step equally important in reviving the patient in the “R” stage of resuscitation that takes place immediately if they are unresponsive!

Our instructors cover this intensive topic under our “Primary Care” course which includes a variation of scenarios involving gained skills in Adult CPR with AED use; Chest Compression Techniques; Child/Infant CPR with AED use; Choking and Scene Assessment(s).

Look out for our next upcoming community course to be advertised and come learn more about how you can be certified at: enquiry@t8-firstresponse.com
