Lads, are you struggling with pelvic pain, pain with urination or stubborn back pain? Your pelvic floor may actually be too tight.
This simple two-minute squat can help release that tension.

Many men assume the problem is weakness, but tight and overactive pelvic floor muscles are far more common. A daily deep squat encourages the pelvic floor to lengthen and the hips to open.

If a full squat feels difficult, start by sitting on yoga blocks in a supported position. Lower the blocks over time until you can hold a comfortable deep squat on your own.

Add this into your daily routine and see how your hips, back and pelvic floor begin to ease.
Share this with someone who needs it.

If your back pain keeps recurring, your body may have adopted a dysfunctional movement pattern to compensate for the injury. Now, it interprets these compensations, such as overactive muscles, as 'normal'.

If that's the case, even if you can get help to relieve the symptoms, it won't be long before your movement patterns cause the pain to recur. What you need to do is improve your movement patterns so that they come naturally, and can promote your back health.

One of the most common causes of low back pain that we've been seeing and treating is stress - and with everything going on in the world at the moment, there are plenty of psychosocial stressors playing into our everyday lives.

We've shared how these stressors can lead to low back pain here: https://physio-central.com/blog/stressors-low-back-pain/

Have you heard of tech neck?

Tech neck is the term used to describe holding the head at a downward angle, the angle often associated with looking at a mobile phone. A 15 degree tilt can put as much as 12kg (27lbs) of strain on the neck and upper back due to the weight of the head.

Your spine isn't built to withstand that force for prolonged periods of time. The result of tech neck is muscular and ligamentous strain that can cause pain, discomfort, headaches, stiffness and reduced mobility, jaw tension, and tingling or numbness in the arms and hands.

Depending on your symptoms, effective treatment for tech neck will vary but often requires physiotherapy to relieve pain and muscle tension as well as postural correction strategies such as:

🤳🏼Keep your phone at eye level
🤳🏼Minimise long periods of phone use
🤳🏼Strengthen your postural muscles

The sacroiliac joint is a common source of low back pain, and many times is misdiagnosed as a problem with the discs or the spine. If you have a sacroiliac joint injury, you may notice:

✅ Low back pain - usually a dull ache on one side of your lower back that may extend into the thigh or groin
✅ Buttock pain - pain can range from an ache to a sharp stabbing pain
✅ Pain while climbing stairs - activities that require weight transfer onto one leg
✅ Difficulty sitting or lying on one side

To get some relief from sacroiliac joint pain, a sacroiliac joint belt may assist in reducing your symptoms. This can be combined with ice on the painful joint if inflammation is present, or heat on the bottom muscles if they are overactive.

When you slouch, it can have a profound impact on your body.

Slouching disengages your core muscles and weakens the muscles in your back. These are the muscles that are responsible for keeping you upright, supporting bodily functions from breathing to digestion to blood flow. Slouching also puts added pressure on your back, as well as a range of health problems including constipation and incontinence.

The key to reduce slouching is to develop and maintain an optimal posture, which can be done with the help of your physio. This isn't just your posture when sitting at a chair, but when standing, working, exercising, watching TV - it's a big effort to make the change with a lot of re-learning, but it's very possible with help.

Can Pilates help low back pain?

As the biggest musculoskeletal cause of the years people spend living with disability, low back pain is a big issue.

While most acute episodes of low back pain, meaning symptoms have been present for six weeks or less, has a good prognosis, others suffer chronic, persistent or fluctuating low back pain for months, if not years.

Pilates uses low impact, slow but powerful movements to strengthen muscles and increase mobility, and it can help low back pain by:

✅ Teaching muscle activation
✅ Creating long, strong muscles
✅ Developing core strength
✅ Improving posture

Two hours per week, or twice a week for 60 minutes, has been shown to help with relieving lower back pain. One study that had its participants complete an 8-week Pilates exercise program found that it was effective in improving disability, pain, flexibility and balance in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain.

Completing 6-12 weeks of Pilates sessions has also been shown to be effective in helping both acute low back pain, as well as chronic pain, relieving pain and improving mobility for up to 24 weeks.
