YOU ARE EATING LESS BUT YOU ARE NOT LOSING WEIGHT

We often come across overweight patients who attempted to lose weight by eating less e.g. omitting breakfast or cutting a bowl of rice. Yet, their weight remains unchanged. Why?

1. You are too stressed by the body weight issue. Too much stress increases the release of the hormone, cortisol which would increase your appetite and stimulate fat storage.

2. Your body has adapted to the ‘starvation’ and slow down the metabolic rate. Thus, less energy is consumed.

3. You eat less but you consume other high-calorie food e.g. salad dressing, sugary drinks.

If you do not think any of the above contributes to the failure in losing weight, talk to a health professional.

CANCER RATES ARE RISING IN YOUNG WOMEN

A recently released report found that cancer has been becoming more common in young people, in particular women. They account for two-thirds of all cancers diagnosed in people under 50.

The causes behind the rise are complex – lifestyle changes, environmental factors, policies. Before more is known about the etiologies of cancers, taking REGULAR SCREENING is one of the most worthwhile actions you should take.

ARE THERE SUPPLEMENTS GOOD FOR YOUR LIVER?

The answer is NO.

In the market, there are various supplements that claim to be good for your liver. In fact, their claims are often not science-based and they should be used cautiously, as high doses, toxic components, or poor-quality products can harm the liver.

Instead, certain foods are good for liver health because they contain antioxidants, support detoxification, or reduce inflammation; these include berries, leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables e.g. broccoli and omega-3-rich fish e.g. salmon.

One last reminder: no alcohol!

ORAL HEALTH & HEART DISEASES

Study after study has shown a link between gum diseases and risk of cardiovascular events e.g. heart disease and stroke.

Preventing and treating gum diseases is thus important.

If you find that your gum is red, swollen or it bleeds easily, you may be suffering from gum diseases e.g. gingivitis or periodontal disease. Consult a healthcare professional early.

WHAT ITEMS ARE COMMONLY INCLUDED IN A LIPID PROFILE REPORT?

1. Total Cholesterol: The total sum of cholesterol content (LDL + HDL + 20% of triglycerides).

2. HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) - "Good" Cholesterol: Transports cholesterol away from arteries to the liver. Higher level is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular events.

3. LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) - "Bad" Cholesterol: Deposits cholesterol in artery walls, increasing risk of heart disease and stroke.

4. Triglycerides: A type of fatty substance in the blood; high levels are linked to heart disease and stroke.

DO YOU NEED A MOUTHWASH?

It depends. The fact is that mouthwash cannot replace daily brushing and flossing. If you do want to use mouthwash, try a natural option: a simple saltwater mouthwash.

Saltwater mouthwashes are an excellent short-term treatment. Salt acts as a natural disinfectant and it helps remove any swelling from the tissues. It is often recommended to use salt water for two or three weeks after dental surgery, and in cases of infection or mouth ulcers.

Long term use of a saltwater mouth rinse is not recommended as it could lead to tooth erosion.

NATURAL SOURCES OF ESTROGEN (THE ‘FEMALE HORMONE’)

The level of estrogen will gradually drop when a woman is getting old. Menopausal symptoms often accompany the decrease in estrogen level in blood. Instead of taking ‘supplements’ bought over the counter, you may consider taking more natural foods. Natural sources of estrogen, known as phytoestrogens, are plant-derived compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. Examples are:

1. Beans – especially soybeans and its products like tofu.

2. Nuts and seeds – walnuts, sesame seeds and flaxseeds.

3. Legumes – chickpeas and lentils.

THE ‘FEEL GOOD’ HORMONES

Hormones are your body's chemical messengers. They regulate everything from how your body functions to how you feel. There is a group of hormones that can make you feel happy: dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin.

You don’t have to take supplements. One simple way to boost the level of these hormones is by doing exercise. If you feel stressed, anxious or unhappy, go for a walk or just do something. You would feel better.
