[OKOsix Update!!] 🥁

Excited to share that ÖKOSIX took part in the signing ceremony yesterday, marking the launch of operations at the new Shenzhen Hetao–Hong Kong Youth Innovation Hub (科學園深圳分園－河套香港青年科創谷), established by the Hong Kong Science Park - under its “One Ecosystem, Two Cities” strategy.

🏢 Our Shenzhen office positions us to better serve clients operating in China as sales grow. It will serve as our Mainland China headquarters, where we plan to recruit scientists and R&D talent, and establish our first factory outside of Hong Kong.

👩‍🏫 👨‍🏫 Beyond expansion, this move strengthens our cross-border R&D and commercialization capabilities, while giving us closer access to advanced manufacturing, deep-tech talent, and faster prototyping across the Greater Bay Area.

🇭🇰 With strong policy backing, Hong Kong’s long-term commitment to I&T development is further reinforced in the latest Budget by Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, including a proposed HK$10 billion ($1.28 billion) to accelerate development of the Hong Kong Park and strengthen startup and venture support.

🏆 Prof. Toste is Chair of the Dept. of Chemistry at UC Berkeley, The Gerald E. K. Branch Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, and a faculty scientist at the chemical sciences division of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his pioneering work in chemical synthesis and catalytic innovation.

How long do soft non-woven fabrics take to decompose?

😷 In healthcare, personal protective equipment (PPE) like surgical masks or gowns are essential — we can’t avoid them.

However all these are made of layers of plastic, primarily polypropylene (PP), and can take over 400 years to biodegrade.

🗑️ Every day, billions of masks alone are discarded globally. This is a plastic problem we urgently need to solve at its root.

And plastic doesn’t truly vanish. It breaks into microplastics that infiltrate soil, entering oceans, food chains, and even human bodies.

☘️ That’s why we developed — our next-generation, 100% plant-based material for producing medical-grade face masks and gowns. It is certified to decompose in 6 months after disposal in landfill environment, thus can be disposed of as ordinary waste. It is also ready for drop-in replacement, helping healthcare cut its plastic and carbon footprint without changing existing production lines.

Last month, we were shortlisted for the Top 200 at . Eddie, our Founder, took the stage to introduce , our medical-grade, 100% biodegradable plastic that runs on existing production lines (and costs less than PLA!).

Through TechCrunch, we connected with investors and potential clients who showed great interest in our innovation.

Our mission is simple: *real impact, not hype*.

Healthcare alone throws away millions of tons of plastic every year, and we want to change that, starting with medical face masks and surgical gowns, and later diapers and other single-use items.
