Brain exercises are activities designed to enhance brain health and function, such as playing Mahjong or engaging in memory games. Changing your environment or daily routine can also be an effective way to boost brain vitality. These activities should be done physically, rather than relying on phones or computers, as the light from these devices can put additional strain on the eyes and brain. Regarding concerns about whether prolonged use of electronic devices increases the risk of brain cancer, research has not found any clear causal or correlational links. In today's society, it is nearly impossible to completely avoid exposure to electronic waves, as Wi-Fi and various devices constantly emit them. Therefore, moderate use of phones is unlikely to have a significant impact on health. As Albert Einstein once said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change." We should evaluate intelligence by our ability to adapt to changing environments and continually improve our capacity to face new challenges.

The belief that eating pig brains can enhance memory is a common misconception based on the idea that "like supports like." However, not only does it fail to improve memory, but it also increases the risk of stroke in the brain and cardiovascular system. In contrast, nutrients found in nuts, such as vitamin D, unsaturated fats, and fatty acids, play a crucial role in brain health. Although there is no significant structural difference between animal and human brains, the key distinction lies in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for our personality, thoughts, behaviour, and perception, allowing us to control our impulses and make appropriate decisions. We can maintain brain health and achieve its full potential by getting enough sleep, consuming a balanced diet, and exercising regularly.

Although there are no significant differences in brain structure between men and women, they typically view things from different perspectives, which can lead to varying emotional responses. The limbic system, located between the brain's two hemispheres (including structures such as the olfactory nerve, hippocampus, hypothalamus, mammillary bodies, and amygdala), is closely related to our emotional reactions. For example, when we smell certain scents, they might evoke thoughts or memories associated with particular events. When we receive information through sight, hearing, touch, smell, or taste, the brain temporarily stores these short-term memories in the hippocampus. Then, it distributes them to the corresponding areas of the brain. This shows that the more sensory information the brain receives from a single event, the stronger the memory of that event becomes.

We commonly believe that emotions originate from the heart, but in fact, emotions are formed in our brain. The brain can be divided based on position (front/back/left/right or from outside to inside) or function, and the entire brain requires about 20% of the total blood supply from the heart to function as its energy source. Since the left brain controls the right side of the body, the left brain is the dominant brain for most people. But do you know the different functions of the left and right brain? The left brain, also known as the "academic brain," is primarily responsible for logic, thinking, analysis, language, comprehension, and judgment. On the other hand, the right brain, often referred to as the "artistic brain," is mainly responsible for inspiration, creativity, imagination, emotion, and aesthetics. It is important to note that writing with the left hand does not necessarily indicate a more active right brain, so the myth that left-handed people have inferior brain function should be dispelled.

Harvard research has found that positive social connections are closely related to health, happiness, and longevity. Our social circles should not be limited to people of similar age; we should continuously learn from others. We should not take things for granted but always be grateful and mindfully experience happiness. As the famous speaker Mark Twain said, "The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up." Pay attention to the people around you, and through caring for and helping them, you will also receive care and feel happiness. Be mindful of your body's various reactions and emotions, and seek professional help if needed.

Research has found a close relationship between loneliness and depression in the elderly. In recent years, during the pandemic, elderly people have reduced outings to lower the risk of infection, which has decreased their social opportunities. Long-term isolation at home has increased negative emotions and thoughts, contributing to the development of depression and creating a vicious cycle. We can express support and care by actively maintaining contact with the elderly. Visiting the elderly, inviting or accompanying them to community centres to participate in activities, and teaching them to use technology for communication can help them re-engage socially. Family members or caregivers should also share their life experiences, provide companionship, and pay attention to and listen to the needs of the elderly.

When the elderly experience changes in personality, loss of interest in activities, and memory decline, they may be suffering from depression. Dementia and depression exhibit similar symptoms, often causing confusion. Elderly individuals with depression often feel physical discomfort without an identifiable cause, which could be the autonomic nervous system expressing emotional distress through physical symptoms. Depression makes it difficult for the elderly to feel joy, leading to feelings of emptiness and helplessness. Psychiatrists will carefully assess the situation to determine whether medication is necessary to help the elderly combat depression. It is important to note that antidepressants typically take two to three weeks to start working, after which psychiatrists will adjust the medication as needed.

As Hong Kong has the highest average life expectancy for both men and women globally, how can we help the elderly achieve a high quality of life?

Staying active is one of the important factors for a high-quality life as we age. Besides exercising, it is also essential to keep our brains active, stimulating brain cells. If an elderly person experiences a decline in memory, decision-making ability, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills, affecting daily functioning, it is advisable to seek professional help.

Three key strategies for preventing addictive behaviours: “OPP”

1. Be observant: Pay close attention to any unusual behavior in your loved ones. This includes changes in mood, sleep patterns, eating habits, energy levels, and social interactions. If you notice any significant or sudden changes, it's important to talk to them about it in a supportive and non-judgmental way.
2. Be patient: If you suspect that someone you care about may be struggling with addiction, it's crucial to be patient and understanding. Avoid blaming or shaming the individual, as this will only make the situation worse. Instead, focus on providing support and encouragement, and work together to find appropriate treatment options.
3. Be persistent: Recovery from addiction is often a long and challenging process, and there may be setbacks along the way. It's important to remain persistent and supportive, even if the individual relapses. Don't give up on them, and

Can you differentiate between a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and a psychotherapist?

Many people have misconceptions about the differences between psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychotherapists. As Dr. Lam Mei-ling explained, in Hong Kong, there is no "psychologist doctor." People often conflate the roles of "clinical psychologists" and "psychiatrists." Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have received specialized training in psychiatry. They can diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medication. Clinical psychologists are not medical doctors. They cannot prescribe medication, but they use psychological therapy methods to help patients overcome various mental and emotional problems. Psychiatrists are the mental health professionals who can provide both psychological treatment and medication management, as they are qualified physicians.
