Do not underestimate the value of asana. Even in simple asanas, one is experiencing the three levels of the quest: the external quest, which brings firmness of the body; the internal quest, which brings steadiness of intelligence; and the innermost quest, which brings benevolence of spirit. While a beginner is not generally aware of these aspects while performing the asana, they are there.  Often, we hear people saying that they remain active and light when they do just a little bit of asana practice. When

a raw beginner experiences this state of wellbeing, it is not merely the external or anatomical effects of yoga. It is also about the internal physiological and psychological effects of the practice.

不要低估體位法的價值。即便在簡單的體位法練習中,我們也會有三個層次的追尋體驗:外在的追尋給我們帶來身體的強健;內在的追尋給我們帶來智性的平和;而深層的追尋給我們帶來靈性的仁愛。初學者在練習體位法時,未必體會到這些層面,但這些層面仍然存在。我們經常聽人說:只做了一點點體位法練習就感覺活躍和輕盈。初練瑜伽的人有這樣的體會,就已經不僅僅局限於瑜伽的外在效應或純身體效應,其中也包含瑜伽的內在生理及心理效應。

To be spiritual, one must not deny or forget the body. Throughout the journey to the spiritual goal, the body must be kept active. Yoga is as old and traditional as civilization, yet it persists in modern society as a means to achieving essential vitality. But yoga demands that we develop not only strength in body but attention and awareness in mind. The yogi knows that the physical body is not only the temple for our soul but the means by which we embark on the inward journey toward the core. Only by first attending to the physical body can we hope to accomplish anything in our spiritual lives.

追求心靈生活,我們不能否認或忘記身體。在追求精神生活的整個過程中,我們必須保持身體的活躍。瑜伽的歷史與文明本身一樣久遠,然而瑜伽在現代社會中仍舊是獲得健康與活力的重要手段。但瑜伽要求我們不僅要培養身體的力量,還要培養精神的一與醒覺。瑜伽行者深知:身體不但是靈性的寓居之所,也是進行內心之旅的資具載體。只有先關注身體,我們才能指望獲得心靈生活的成就。

This process of relaxing the brain is achieved through asana. We generally think of mind as being in our head. In asana our consciousness spreads throughout the body, eventually diffusing in every cell, creating a complete
awareness. In this way stressful thought is drained away, and our mind focuses on the body, intelligence, and awareness as a whole.

這個放鬆大腦的過程是透過體位法的修習來實現。我們通常以為意識是在頭腦之中,而在體位法修練中,我們的意識貫通全身,最終散播於身體的每一個細胞,實現完滿的覺性。此時,緊張的意念被排空,而我們的心專注於身體、智性與覺性的整體。

Often people think that sitting quietly is meditation. This is a misunderstanding. True meditation leads us to wisdom (jnana) and awareness (prajna), and this specifically helps in understanding that we are more than our ego. For this one needs the preparations of the postures and the breathing, the withdrawal of the senses and concentration.

By drawing our senses of perception inward, we are able to experience the control, silence, and quietness of the mind. This ability to still and gently silence the mind is essential, not only for meditation and the inward journey but also so that the intuitive intelligence can function usefully and in a worthwhile manner in the external world.

Pranayama is not performed by the power of will. The
breath must be enticed or cajoled, like catching a horse in
a field, not by chasing after it, but by standing still with
an apple in one's hand. In this way, pranayama teaches
humility and frees us from greed or hankering after the
fruits of our actions. Nothing can be forced; receptivity is
everything.

呼吸法不是由意志力進行。氣息必須引誘或哄誘,如同在田野裡套馬,不能追趕,而要手拿蘋果站立不動才行。就這樣,呼吸法教給我們謙卑的心態,讓我們擺脫貪婪,不再急切地追求我們自身行為的結果。一切都不可強求;順受就是一切。

Much has been said by certain people about the dangers of yoga, and the risk of injury. But if you walk in the street carelessly, you can have an accident. So do you advise people not to walk? People die when they are in bed. So is it dangerous to sleep on a bed?

I have been doing yoga for over fifty years, and have taught many thousands of students in the five continents of this globe. Sadly, there are teachers of yoga who know very little and claim to teach. The problem comes not from the art of yoga, but from the inexperience of the teachers, and also from the impatience of the pupils.

有些人說了很多練瑜伽的危險,有受傷的風險。但是就算走在路上,不小心的話也會發生意外,難道你就勸人不要走路?有人死在床上,那麼在床上睡覺也很危險嗎?

我瑜伽練了五十多年,在全球五大洲教過千千萬萬的人。可悲的是,有人學了一些皮毛,就當起所謂的瑜伽老師。問題不在瑜伽這門學問,問題出在老師沒有經驗,還有就是學生沒有耐心。

As we grow, the defensive strength gets less and the offensive strength increases. That is how diseases enter into our system. A body which carries out yogic practice is like a fort which keeps up its defensive strength so that the offensive strength in the form of diseases will not enter into it through the skin. Which do you prefer? Yoga helps to maintain the defensive strength at an optimum level, and that is what is known as health.

隨著年齡增長,人的防衛力減弱,惡勢力增強,所以疾病進入我們的系統。練瑜伽的身體就像有防衛力的堡壘,疾病這些惡勢力就不會由皮膚進入身體。兩者之間你願意選哪一種?瑜伽幫助我們把防衛力維持在最佳狀態,這就是大家認知的健康。

Do not have it in your mind that you should have something extraordinary to show to other people. If you put a seed in the ground today and say, 'In ten days I want fruit,' does it come? The fruit comes naturally, does it not? When the tree is ready to bear fruit, it comes. Even if you say, 'I want it, I want it!' it does not come any sooner. But when you think that the tree is not going to give you fruit at all, all of a sudden you see the fruit grow. It has to come naturally, not artificially. So work, and let it come or let it not come, but continue your practice. Then, even if you have a family life and family commitments, there are no problems.

心裡不要想著自己應該有些什麼特殊的東西要展示給別人看。今天你把種子埋在土裡,然後說:「十天之內我要看到果子。」可能嗎?時候到了自然就有果子,不是嗎?到了這棵樹該結果子的時候,果子就出來了。儘管你不停地唸:「我要果子,我要果子!」果子也不會提早出現。但就在你以爲這棵樹根本不會結果子時,突然就看到果子長出來了。果子必須自然而然地出來,沒有辦法造作。所以,老實練習吧。有成果也罷,沒成果也罷,你就持續練習吧。那麼,即使有家庭生活和家庭責任,都不成問題。
