💡NDT for ASD: Neuro-Developmental Treatment for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder:
This is a hybrid course designed to teach the theory and hands-on NDT principles as they apply to children with ASD. Current motor control literature and neurobiological research each increasingly highlight the prevalence of motor systems impairments as part of the ASD diagnosis. Despite this, movement challenges are the functional limitations are most often neglected in the treatment of children with ASD. Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) is a frame of reference that guides clinicians in the analysis and treatment of posture and movement. This cutting-edge workshop applies NDT principals, assessment, and intervention in treating the movement challenges of children on the spectrum. Comparing and contrasting between ASD compensatory motor patterns and typical motor development will be emphasized, offering a foundation for the facilitation of new motor learning.
💡Regulation Matters: Polyvagal Theory, Interoception and Emotional Integration:
Regulation has become a powerful buzzword guiding behavioural goals and interventions established by clinicians and educators across the world. But what does “regulation” truly mean? This in-person three-day workshop weaves together concepts from Polyvagal Theory, interoceptive processing and emotional integration. Combining theory with practical video demos, labs and problem-solving conversations will support the carry-over from theory into day-to-day application of strategies towards well-being and function. This workshop is relevant to all professionals supporting human beings (especially individuals living with neurodiversity and trauma) who are keen to understand their own regulation and co-regulation literally from the inside-out.

So excited to read this 2023 article by Demchick et al: Early Indicators of Autism in Infants: Development of the IMES Screening Tool. The pilot study demonstrated validity and reliability of the Infant Motor and Engagement Scale (IMES) for early identification of Autism in infants 6 to 9 months. Early identification sets the stage for early intervention!

At the World Championships in Budapest, USA’s Anita Alvarez sank to the bottom of the pool.
Looking across the deck, and noticing she was under way too long, her coach, Andrea Fuentes immediately dove in after her fully clothed, pulling her to safety. Anita was unconscious and didn’t have the capacity to kick, paddle, or help herself in any way.
If Andrea would not have noticed, she would have drown.
But she knew Anita. She looked for her, quickly noticed she was under too long, then dove in without thinking twice.
This has resonated with me….
When you are under too long, who are the people that will look for you, notice, and dive in to pull you to the surface when you lose your strength to swim?
Who are the people that would do that for you?
And can someone count on you to be that person that would go looking and notice when they are under too long, diving in to support them when they are all out of fight and fuel to swim in these turbulent waters we call life?

A reward chart is not going to help your child combat anxiety, OCD, overwhelm, chronic dysregulation, tantrums, impulse control, focus, or sensory over- (or under-) stimulation. You can't use behavior modification to regulate the nervous system. It's time to throw out the old thinking and embrace understanding development and relational safety.
