Great Illustration showing the lateral and medial patellar ligaments 🦵🦵🦵

👉 Most of us will know the MPFL as the primary ligamentous restraint of the patella, providing 50–60% of the restraining force against lateral displacement. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22878653/

But as illustrated here, there are other important medial and lateral ligamentous structures as well:

👉 the patellofemoral ligaments (LPFL and MPFL),
👉 the lateral and medial patellomeniscal ligaments (LPML and MPML),
👉 and the lateral and medial patellotibial ligaments (LPTL and MPTL)

😎 Disc protrusion completely resolves on its own!

👋🏻 Here's a case report of a 28 year old with severe back and leg pain

📸 MRI November 2018 showed “Large L4/5disc protrusion w severe cord narrowing/ crowding of cauda equina rootlets”....

🕒 7 months later and a new round of imaging

📸 MRI May 2019 showed reabsorption and now pain free! 😱

➡️ This is a great example of conservative Mx & ‘watch & wait’ approach. We don't know exactly what his treatment consisted of, but we know from the research that disc problems resolve on their own

📚 A meta-analysis (Zhong et al 2017) has shown that 2/3 of disc bulges spontaneously «heal» on their own! Many of them within a few months too, not years

TWO-THIRDS OF HERNIATED DISCS HEAL ON THEIR OWN! - RESULTS FROM A RECENT META-ANALYSIS

Too many people think that once you have a disc herniation (or disc bulge), that you’ve got it for life 😥

Well, a recent meta-analysis (Zhong et al., 2017) has shown that 2/3 of disc bulges spontaneously heal on their own! Many of them within a few months too. 😱

Conclusion from the paper: “Because the overall incidence of disc de-herniation is now 66.66% according to our results, conservative treatment may become the first choice of treatment for LDH.”

Even though discs sometimes herniate, this does NOT mean they 'slip'.
