"I am scared! So I turn it down."
An ex-colleague called me saying his big boss had asked him to step up to lead the department because his immediate boss just resigned.
But he has only served the company for less than 2 years...he thickened out because his department has 30 plus people to manage. He has many "what-if" situations in mind.
My advice to him is that he should say "Yes" right away maybe with a few seconds pondering...or even don't bother to think
For every walk of life, the most difficult and scary thing is never the job itself, nor is the dealing with something new or something big, but the true challenge is always the scarcity of good opportunities for capable guys to prove themselves.
His sense of discomfort will be gone in a year or so, but opportunities never came back again !!
Sometimes successful people are successful not necessarily because they are the most capable guys than others, but because they take hold of every opportunity to test and train themselves constantly...and they grow!
Thanks god. My friend listened to my advice and he is now the department head. He may have some tough time coming along or nightmare as he put it...
but he will be fine soon!
