Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association (The Association) was established in 1948. For more than half a century, the Association has worked closely with the Government and various parties involved in the diagnosis and treatment of chest and heart diseases, health promotion and diseases prevention.
In response to the Chinese medicine policy of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Association collaborated with Hospital Authority (HA) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to establish Chinese medicine clinics aiming at providing professional and evidence-based Chinese medicine service, education and researches. The first clinic, namely THE HONG KONG TUBERCULOSIS ASSOCIATION CHINESE MEDICINE CLINIC CUM TRAINING CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG, commenced service on 1st April 2006 at 2/F Tang Shiu Kin Hospital Community Ambulatory Care Centre in Wan Chai. The centre provided general consultation on Chinese medicine, acupuncture and tui-na treatment.
Similar to the above centre and echoing the increasing popularity of Chinese medicine in the community, the second cooperation with HA and HKU, namely THE HONG KONG TUBERCULOSIS ASSOCIATION – THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG CHINESE MEDICINE CENTRE FOR TRAINING AND RESEARCH (ABERDEEN) was established on 29th March 2011 at 2/F, 10 Aberdeen Reservoir Road, Aberdeen.
The objectives of the above centres are as follows:
To provide quality Chinese medicine service on a self-financed basis;
2. To provide training opportunities for graduates from Chinese medicine schools of local tertiary institutions;
3. To collaborate with HA and HKU to promote evidence-based Chinese medicine practice and clinical researches in compliance with the requirement set by the Ethics Committees under HA
In order to strengthen the role of serving the community and to in line with the policy of Hospital Authority, the two aforementioned clinics could be re-named as “The Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association--The University of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinic cm Training and Research Centre (Wan Chai District)” (Short Form “Wan Chai District Chinese Medicine Clinic”) and “The Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association -- The University of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinic cm Training and Research Centre (Southern District)” (Short Form “Southern District Chinese Medicine Clinic”) with effect from 2nd March 2020.
To further enhance the community medical service and with the privilege to receive a donation from the Vice-president of the Association, Mr. Edwin C.C. LEUNG, a new Chinese medicine clinic (namely HONG KONG TUBERCULOSIS ASSOCIATION EDWIN LEUNG CHINESE MEDICINE CLINIC) commenced service in January 2019 and would formally be opened in mid-2019. The clinic, which was solely owned and managed by the Association, was located at 18/F, 83 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai. The major service rendered included general consultation and acupuncture, which were suitable for patients in Wan Chai District.
Community health education is all along one of the major services of the Association. In order to promote healthy living through Chinese medicine, we cooperated with different organisations to conduct health talks and health consultations in the community. Moreover, articles on Chinese Medicine were posted in different massive media (e.g. TV, newspaper, radio, etc.). Also, internet and social media were used for promoting knowledge of Chinese medicine in the community.
