Utila from a few feet up!
::::::: U T I L A ::::::::
The island of Utila is located 20 miles off the coast of Honduras (port of La Ceiba). Utila is home to over 9,000 people, its the smallest of the Bay Islands after Roatan and Bonacca.
Utila sits on the south end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (second largest in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef).
The land on the island is quite flat, the highest point on the island is Pumpkin Hill.
Utila has approximately 12 small cayes located on the southwest corner of the main island that you can visit by boat only.
Although Honduras is a Spanish speaking country, the first language for the Utilians is English due to their British, Irish and Cayman descendants. In Utila they don’t speak “proper English” it is more of a creole English whenever they’re talking amongst themselves, it is quite interesting and rather entertaining to listen to them speak with their native accent.
Utila has been part of Honduras for over 150 years. For nearly 200 years, Spanish conquistadores and British pirates battled for these islands. During this period, the islands were used for food, safe harbour, wood supplies and slave trading.
Utila is also known as the cheapest place in the world to obtain your diving certificate and to snorkel with the whale shark.
Every year, our island is visited by whale sharks migrating through our waters. Local tour companies offer trips to snorkel with this gentle giant as well as dive shops, and the Whale Shark Research Center that studies the life of the spectacular filter feeder.
If you want to explore the island, you can rent a vehicle for a day and go where the roads take you.
We have several caves, few of them with fresh water (also a great diving experience) but not all of them are easily found, you’ll need to hike to find most of them but the adventure will be worth it.
The locals are friendly people, get to know a few of them and they’ll sit and chat about their island for hours, you’ll learn some really interesting stories about our island.
Utila doesn’t have any 5 star luxurious resorts but there’s just something about this place that makes you forget about all that, all you need is some sunblock, bug repellent, water and you’re good to go!
and experience it for yourself!
