How does ultrasound detect if a baby isn’t growing as expected?
Small for Gestational Age (SGA) baby, often (mistakenly) called Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) baby, means that a baby is growing slowlier in the womb than expected for a given stage of pregnancy. This usually doesn’t indicate a serious problem, but it’s important to recognize and monitor it in time.
Ultrasound allows doctors to carefully track fetal growth by measuring the head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. From these measurements, the estimated fetal weight can be calculated.
The blood flow through the placenta, umbilical cord, liver, brain and uterus is also checked to see whether the baby is receiving enough oxygen and nutrients which differs SGA from FGR.
Why does this matter?
Regular ultrasounds can identify potential concerns early and help ensure the baby’s safety and well-being. Sometimes more frequent check-ups and rest are enough, while in other cases, specialized medical care and delivery may be required.
The reassuring news is that with timely diagnosis and proper monitoring, most babies even with the FGR still do very well. 🌸
