Special hospital AKSIS - neurosurgery, orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Vertebris International Spine Hospital was founded early in 2010 by group of enthusiasts (neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons and anesthesiologists lead by Robert Saftic MD, spinal neurosurgeon) tired of poor results and patient outcomes with traditional back surgery here in Croatia. Plan was to bring something new, something innovative, something better, something minimally-invasive that will ensure high patient satisfaction and reduce medical system expenses. After almost three successful years of work, in September 2012, we have expanded range of our services to minimally-invasive orthopedic joint surgery. Since then, hospital is internationally known as Axis Special Hospital.

We often and with special pride reflect on our beginnings. They were challenging, as what we were doing at the time was not widely understood, nor was the innovation we were offering to our patients fully recognized. Today, more than 15 years later, modern medicine, leading global physicians and renowned hospital systems are moving precisely in that direction.

The photograph shows our patient Joe from Portugal after a laser spinal surgery performed at Special hospital AKSIS. He was one of our very first international patients back in 2010.

What gives this story particular significance is the fact that the surgery was indicated by dr. Daniel Choy from New York, a pioneer and the founder of laser spinal surgery, while the procedure itself was performed by our dr. Robert Saftic in Zagreb.

It is well known that patients 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 come to our hospital and that there is a great demand for our experience, knowledge, second opinion and medical expertise... but it is somewhat less known that surgeons from all over the world come to our hospital almost every month seeking for knowledge about new innovative techniques and approaches to the problem of painful spine that are selflessly shared by our excellent neurosurgeons 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗰, MSc, MD and prof. Revolutionary technology available only at Special hospital AKSIS. The Centaur computer-supported test and training device (CTT) was designed for the 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and to enable 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 with targeted training for operated and non-operated patients, top athletes and recreationists, as well as for all those who need the activation of a certain autonomous body muscle group. Our neurosurgeon prof. Karlo Houra, MD, PhD participated in the South-East European Forum on Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SEEFORT), held in Dubrovnik in mid-May. This important professional gathering brings together leading orthopaedic and trauma specialists from Southeast Europe with the goal of sharing knowledge, experience and the latest technological advancements.

Prof. Houra was an 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲, and together with his colleague Gianluca Vadalà from Italy he moderated the section dedicated to 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆-𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 – a field that is rapidly developing and increasingly becoming a standard in the treatment of numerous spine conditions.

In his lecture he spoke about the possibilities and advantages of transforaminal uniportal endoscopy in disc herniation surgeries. It is a technique that enables surgery under 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁.
