Middle-class share of U.S. wealth has dropped roughly 47 % since the early 1980s.

Hard facts
Early ‘80s: middle-income families held about one-third of national wealth.
Today: they hold less than one-fifth.
The share of adults in the middle-income tier slipped from 61 % (1971) to 50 % (2021).
Since 2000, housing is up ~197 %, college tuition ~178 %, healthcare ~134 %—all far faster than wages.

Why it matters
Rising costs have eaten every wage gain, leaving the typical household with thinner savings and heavier debt than their late-1990s counterparts. When the middle shrinks, upward mobility shrinks with it.

If policy is really “for everyone,” why does the middle keep sliding backward?
