We should be like a farmer: the day he sows, he is happy not because he is thinking of the future harvest; he is happy to have made a beautiful planting and to have sown well. The day the first leaf arises, he is happy with the little leaf; the day there are ten of them, he is happy with the ten leaves, but he is not happy because he is thinking of the fruits; he doesn’t know exactly what they will be like. It is the same for us: we know that one day we may realize ourselves.

Something occurred to me recently after looking at a website about yoga. The website showed young and beautiful people in sexy clothes, doing yoga-influenced movement. The stated intention of their practice was to feel good, whether in a city yoga studio or a stunning retreat in nature.

But what struck me the most was the emphasis on yoga=joy.

We all know this is a way to market yoga. But it also shows how yoga is shaped and perceived in society, creating expectations (and disappointments) for practitioners.

What happens then when yoga is hard? When our teacher challenges us? When we're injured, sad, or lost? What happens when our practice doesn't bring us joy?

Are we doing something wrong? Maybe yoga just isn't our thing?

Creating images that yoga is about feeling happiness is not only false, it's harmful. At best, harmful in it's ignorance to the tradition and depth of yoga. At worst, harmful to people's bodies and minds through irresponsible practices.

Practicing yoga requires commitment and trust. Trust that our teachers are educated, experienced, and respectful and that they are committed to the subject and our learning.

While doing yoga, at any age, we experience a myriad of emotions and sometimes maybe joy. But joy, like all emotions, are fleeting. Pursuing fleeting goals is like trying to build a house on sand. Collapse will come one day.

Instead let's embrace the complexity of yoga and find ways to apply it to our current physical and mental state. Let's investigate ourselves through dedicated and thoughtful practice. Let's discard superficial images and explore new possibilities in our inner and outer worlds.

Yoga is far more than joy. Joy comes in discovery.

“Yoga is not about the shape of a pose,” “It’s about balancing the energetic system so energy flow is stimulated in a balanced way. The key question to ask yourself about your asana practice is not how much you achieved a certain shape, but how you feel when you come out of a pose. If you feel lighter, more balanced and more energetic, that’s good. If not, work on your alignment.
“Advancement in yoga is not a matter of doing more difficult poses. That’s just ego gratification. Advancement is improving alignment in a pose and doing it with integrity. The goal is to open in a good, balanced way. Instead of imposing form, you need to think like a sculptor. The correct form is there inside yourself, and you chip away with careful, attentive movements until it comes out.
“The main idea of yoga is to know yourself. It’s about understanding, not tricks. Everyone has different constitutional limits to what they can do, but there is no limit to bring refinement into a pose. Of all the sutras, there’s one that I think is especially useful to keep in mind when you practice: Chitta vritti niroddah.where awareness flows, energy follows. When you practice with awareness, you will enjoy the greatest benefit.”
