A new study from Wuhan University suggests Parkinson’s disease may begin in the kidneys, not the brain. Researchers found abnormal alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) protein clusters in patients’ kidneys, which may travel to the brain when the kidneys can’t clear them properly. The study also found α-Syn buildup in people with kidney disease even without neurological symptoms, hinting that the kidneys could be an early source of Parkinson’s-related damage. Though still early-stage, this research could shift how we understand and treat Parkinson’s disease.
