Scientists discovered hidden gold inside pyrite (fool's gold) — and they’re working on a way to extract it.

For centuries, pyrite, commonly known as “fool’s gold,” has deceived prospectors with its resemblance to real gold. But a new study suggests that pyrite might be more valuable than previously thought.

Researchers from Curtin University, the University of Western Australia, and the China University of Geoscience have discovered that tiny gold particles are hidden within nanoscale defects in pyrite crystals. Using advanced atom probe tomography, they found that the more deformed the crystal, the more gold it contains—offering a new way to mine gold that could be both more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Traditional gold extraction methods rely on energy-intensive pressure oxidation, but researchers are exploring an alternative called selective leaching. This method dissolves gold trapped in pyrite using a fluid that targets the gold while leaving the rest of the mineral intact. By harnessing these nanoscale gold deposits, the mining industry could reduce its environmental impact while tapping into previously overlooked gold sources. This breakthrough could be a game-changer, proving that even fool’s gold may contain real treasure—and a greener path forward for gold extraction.
