The Connection Between Organs & Emotions:
In Chinese Medicine, understanding emotions means exploring the 5 Spirits: Shen (Heart), Hun (Liver), Po (Lung), Yi (Spleen), & Zhi (Kidney). Each spirit embodies a unique aspect of our mental, emotional, & spiritual life, with significant ties to the body’s visceral organs.
The liver governs the smooth flow of Qi & blood. When imbalanced, often due to stress or poor lifestyle choices, Liver Qi Stagnation can occur, directly affecting the HUN, which is linked to creativity & adaptability. The HUN is responsible for our imagination & the ability to turn desires into reality. When the liver struggles, the HUN becomes constrained, manifesting as indecision, irritability, frustration, or blocked creativity.
The balance of the HUN is influenced by both liver health & mental patterns. Negative, rigid thoughts can stagnate the HUN’s flow, leading to frustration, irritability, or anger, while chronic anger can further impair liver function, trapping us in a cycle of emotional & physical tension, underscoring the link between emotional & physical health.
It’s essential to recognize that while organs do not physically "store" emotions, they are significantly impacted by their corresponding Spirit. The liver’s health can influence how we process & express emotions like anger, & Yin Yoga can serve as an effective tool. Poses that target the Liver meridian, when practiced mindfully, can help us access deeper emotional layers, revealing the state of our HUN & uncovering unresolved frustrations or the root causes of anger.
As Yin teachers, understanding these concepts enhances our ability to guide students through deeper self-exploration, gently supporting their emotional & energetic release.
