Where will your teaching or coaching take you once you graduate from your next practitioner training?

Like you, our Alumni are an ambitious lot. And we love hearing what they’ve been up to once graduating as a Breath Coach, Yin Yoga Teacher or Meditation Teacher. We’ve followed students as they’ve gone off to teach and guide their students and clients across the globe in the most imaginative and impactful ways!

Take Shriyanka, for instance, who has been teaching breathwork to her students in ancient caves in Australia!

Or Paul, who works with men to help improve mental and physical health through mindfulness and breathwork.

And Fran, who works as a head of wellness at a school and has got not only the students but the teachers on board to use breathing techniques to feel calmer and more connected to themselves and each other.

We could go on and on. We’re so proud of each of our students!

Because sometimes all you need is an inspiring course to deepen your own experience and to develop your teaching tool kit and WHOOSH! The doors open, the inspiration comes and off you go! The sky's the limit!

If you’re a coach or healer and want to add breathwork, Yin Yoga or meditation to your offerings, or you know you have it in you to truly help and support others but you haven’t made your first steps to becoming a certified coach or teacher yet, then take inspiration from our alumni - who are creating experiences and transformation to the people who need it most!

All 3 of our training courses are available now as an on-demand courses, we’ve also bundled our trainings up if you know you want to study more than 1!

We look forward to hearing where YOU will be teaching and coaching your clients once you graduate!

Meditation is an advanced practice and often needs a preliminary practice beforehand to prepare the mind & body for meditation (the Yogis knew this millennia ago, hence yoga!) 🧘‍♀️

But if you don’t have the time to do a full 90-minute yoga practice before you sit down to meditate (because ) then here are a few practices you could try to prepare your body & mind for your seated practice.

What other practices do you find helpful to prepare yourself for meditation?

13 years ago my partner at the time tried to ‘make me meditate’ (I was experiencing anxiety and mild depression and was at a huge turning point in my life, hello Saturn Returns), deep down I knew there was something in this thing called meditation but I also knew instinctively that trying to force someone to meditate was not the way (or even remotely possible)!

Not long after I began diving into yoga.

In the beginning meditation was simply the moments where we sat in stillness at the end of a practice.

It took me until after my first Yoga Teacher Training a couple of years later to see meditation as a practice in its own right. As with many people I found it particularly hard to sit in stillness & silence for more than a minute, let alone to create regular practice!

And this led me to ask why?

Why was it so hard to be still?
Why was it so hard for me to be with ME?
What ARE all those thoughts rattling around in my mind?
Why can I not concentrate on one thing for more than a few seconds?
Why is it so hard to commit to a regular practice?

So it was with these questions that I dived head first into understanding meditation, understanding about the way that the mind & body are so intrinsically linked, learning how to be still and finding comfort in being with my own discomfort.

Fast forward to today and my meditation practice is as regular as going to bed at night! And the benefits have been profound.

If you are desiring to connect deeper with your meditation practice and have the honour to guide others towards a life enhancing practice, doors are open for our 25hr Online Meditation Teacher Training.

Feeling stressed or overwhelmed and want some easy practices that you can do anywhere to help you feel more calm?

The breath is an incredible tool that speaks directly to the nervous system - the part of us that either keeps us on high alert (fight or flight) or helps us to relax (rest and digest). By changing the way we breathe we can change the way our nervous system responds to our circumstances, thoughts and emotions.

Try these breath practices next time you’re feeling worried, anxious, or overwhelmed.

Psst; Want to master over 20 breath practices for a variety of purposes (physical, emotional, and energetic) and learn how to confidently and safely teach others?

Here's what our student had to say:

"This course has changed my life. When I was looking for coaches and programs for breathwork, my main focus was to find a system and set of teachers/coaches who exuded mindfulness, calming energy, and could speak to the power of breath not just from a holistic/spiritual level. When I came across Rachel and Lucy, The Whole Health Project, I knew this was the right place. This course has so much wonderful information and they provide wonderful guidance on how to not only master breath awareness within yourself but also be able to facilitate this process for others. Also, the bonus modules were absolutely empowering as a new business owner. Thank you, Thank you! Namaste."

What are the pros and cons of going to a Breathwork Practitioner vs a Breath Coach?

The answer is “It depends”.

Breath Coach Pros;
If you’re looking for someone to work with a diverse group of people with multiple levels of experience and diverse needs, or if you’re a therapist and want to add breath practices that can be adapted to everyone as part of your offerings then looking for a Breath Coach or a Breath Coach training would serve you well. It’s likely that the practices you will learn will be varied, safe, adaptable and relevant to a wide and diverse group of people.

The breath practices that Breath Coaches will offer are considered safe and adaptable for those who might be carrying emotional trauma.

Breath Coach Cons;
Breath Coaches aren’t always trauma informed/trained, which is why they don’t teach the dynamic breath practices that can trigger pre existing trauma.

Breathwork Practitioner Pros;
If you’re interested in a specific breath technique that is considered more “extreme” like holotropic breathwork, circular breathing or rebirthing breathwork then you’d want to go to an experienced Breathwork Practitioner who specialises in that technique. The techniques can help to shift stagnant or unwanted energy or emotions that other therapies aren’t able to access.

Breathwork Practitioner Cons;
It’s important to note that these techniques are often very stimulating and therefore aren’t for everyone as they can have detrimental effects for those who are highly stressed or who have a preexisting breathing dysfunction that hasn’t been noticed. If you are looking to attend a class or do a training in one of these more dynamic breath techniques it’s important to check that the Breathwork Practitioner is trauma informed and/or has the knowledge and team to support their students if pre existing trauma is triggered during the practices.

NOTE; These descriptions are not finite and there is a lot of crossover between disciplines and trainings.

No one should go through burnout, the way I did.

I’m sharing this story with you again as so many people reached out when I shared it a year ago and said that it resonated with them…

In 2013 I became a yoga teacher so that I could combine 2 of my passions and teach yoga to surfers. Within 12 months of graduating, I left my dance career behind, taught surfers (and surf!) in 5 countries, and started 2 small companies.

I was having the time of my life, but something wasn’t right. I lost my period, my hair started to fall out and I was exhausted. Like, REALLY exhausted

I made it back to the UK after working flat out for 7 months without a break and within a month I ended up in a hospital emergency room after I went downhill at a friend’s wedding and was diagnosed with extreme exhaustion and adrenal fatigue.

The message was clear - chill the F out! But first I had to learn how!

Up until then, I had felt this panic that if I slowed down then everything would fall apart around me. Nothing would get done. I wouldn’t have fun. I wouldn’t make any money. Opportunities would slip away from me.

After I crashed I was forced to stop. This is when Yin Yoga came into my life. The concept of Yin was new to me, let alone the practice of Yin Yoga, but the stillness, the space, and the silence Felt So Good.

I knew this was what was missing from my life, Yin. Before this, I only really knew GO!

It took me a while, but by learning gentle practices and reminding myself to be kind to myself, to look at the bigger picture, and to remind myself that I NEVER wanted to crash again, I slowly started to regain balance and my health again.

Now, as a fully recovered “Yangster” and Yin Yoga TT facilitator, I have the insight and wisdom to spot the tale-tale signs in others who need this practice the most.

Teaching Yin Yoga means I get to hold space for those brave souls who are stopping, pausing, resting, and creating space for themselves….

One of the (many) superpowers that both Lucy and I share is our ability to communicate with each other in a way that is honest, open and nonvolatile.

And this has been without a doubt one of the greatest keys to our success.

Our ability to both speak our truths in a way that feels authentic to ourselves, AND our ability to listen with the sole intention to truly HEAR the other is one of the reasons our business partnership has stood the test of time.

I love this quote

‘The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand. We listen to respond.’

Lucy and I listen to understand.

We both FEEL heard by the other.

We both respect & celebrate each other's differences, we don't try to change each other.

We are often asked how we are able to have such a solid friendship AND partnership.

And this my friends, is how.

It’s not magic. It’s work.

Work we are both inspired to continually do because our business, our partnership, our friendship benefits.

And not only that, how we are outside of our business and friendship benefits.

I am a better mother, daughter, sister and friend, because I learnt how to listen. How to be still. How to HEAR another human, simply with the desire to understand them, rather than to respond.

Try this.

For the next 24 hours, whenever someone talks to you, just ask questions and listen.

Don’t respond, other than to either thank them for sharing or to ask them clarifying questions. Create spaciousness in your conversations. ACTUALLY wait for someone to finish talking BEFORE you respond.

See how your relationships shift INSTANTLY when you do this well.

The space might be uncomfortable. It’s not easy friends, but it’s F*&king worth it.

With love,

Rachel (& Lucy)

After nearly 3 years we finally made it back to the UK in June this year. For 3 years we didn’t leave Bali - I don’t think I've ever been in one place for so long since I was a young child!

Traveling was something that came so naturally to me, I knew since I was 12 years old that I wanted to live in other countries other than the UK, so being stationary for so long felt strange - and at the same time there was something inherently grounding about it, so much so that it was a REAL challenge to leave!

So much has happened in the last 3 years…

💗 We sadly closed our retreat due to the pandemic and created our new business supporting people to become breath, meditation & yin, yoga teachers.

💗 My Mum has moved into a care home with advanced dementia - the last time I saw her she had moderate dementia and was being cared for at home. Now she doesn’t know who I am. The grief surrounding this can be overwhelming at times, and other times I am at peace with this.

💗 I reconnected with my daughter's father, we were estranged since I was 2 months pregnant, we reconnected 2.5 years ago and now co-parent pretty happily.

💗 Yemaja met her paternal grandmother for the first time during our UK trip, she flew to the UK from the US and her Daddy flew from Bali & the 4 of us holidayed together for 2.5 weeks in Cornwall - and it is bringing all of us so much joy, that we can co-parent, holiday together and be friends with ease!

And these are just a few of the massive life events that have happened since I was last back in the UK. It feels nostalgic, weird, lovely, and intense all rolled into one.

We feel it in our bodies first. The need to rest, the need to nourish, the need to slow down.

But do you know WHAT type or rest you are actually needing?
The style of rest differs depending on where you have been placing all your energy.

If you've been chasing after a toddler for months on end, the type of rest you need will differ from someone who has been working on a computer 20 hours a day for months on end.

If you've been through a huge emotional rollercoaster, the type of rest you need will be different to someone who has been working night shifts for years.

Can you feel the difference?

Here are the 7 different types of rest we should ALL be getting…

We all need all these types of rest but in a different order of priority.

Which one are you most in need of right now?

1. Passive physical rest
👉🏻Sleeping, napping & Yoga Nidra
2. Active physical rest
👉🏻Yoga, Qi Gong, Yin Yoga, walking in nature
3. Mental rest
👉🏻Time away from intense conversations, from media, and from any intake of information
4. Sensory rest
👉🏻Time away from screens, lights & anything overly stimulating for the senses
5. Creative rest
👉🏻Immersing yourself in creative pursuits for no reason other than to enjoy
6. Emotional rest
👉🏻Create a pause before responding, meditate
7. Social rest
👉🏻Taking time out from social interactions, choosing to only spend time with people who fill you up

Read one of our student’s ah-ha moments around paradoxical breathing.

"My ah-ha moment was when Rachel was explaining about breathing dysfunctions and that's when it became confirmatory to me that actually, I have been a paradoxical breather! When she was describing the behavior of paradoxical breathers, I felt she was talking about me. Before I started this course I knew my breathing pattern was wrong as since childhood I was told to suck my stomach in for a flatter appearance which to me meant breath in! So breathing in to me meant suck your stomach in and hold your breath and breathing out meant the opposite! The realisation and the acknowledgment and just nodding my head when Rachel was talking about paradoxical breathing has been a real ah-ha moment for me!"

If you are curious to learn more about dysfunctional breathing and how you can resolve these within yourself AND support others to do the same, follow the link in the bio to sign up for our 25hr Online Breath Coach Training today!
