SCOLIOSIS by Physiotherapist Selvya Shinta Dewi

Scoliosis is the abnormal twisting & sideways curvature of the spine or backbone. Viewed from the back, a typical spine is straight. When scoliosis occurs, the spine curve to the side as single curve to the left or to the right (shaped like the letter C) or the spine has two curves (shaped like the letter S).
Physician will look for:
• Curvature of the spine
• Uneven shoulders, or protrusion of one shoulder blade
• Asymmetry of the waistline
• One hip higher than the other
People with scoliosis can develop back pain, just as most of adult population can develop back pain. Once scoliosis is detected, a physician will continue to monitor the curvature. It may order an X-ray of the spine and use the “Cobb method” to calculate the curvature of the spine.
Because the skeletons of children and young adults grow quickly, there is a reasonable chance that if a curve is detected, the degree of the spinal curve may worsen as the spine continues to grow. It should be closely monitored by a physician in the event that the curve progresses & needs scoliosis treatment provided by Physiotherapist.

Women are three times more likely to have carpal tunnel syndrome than men, it caused the carpal tunnel in some women smaller than in men. The prolonged injury ofCarpal tunnel syndrome may result in permanent damage of the nerve, persistent of numbness symptoms, atrophy of the muscles of the thumb, and difficulty moving the thumb, also strength of the grip become powerless.

TENNIS ELBOW EXERCISES by Physiotherapist Heru Prasetyaningsih

Despite its name, this condition is not only seen in tennis players but is also seen in other sports or recreational activities that involve repetitive stress on the muscles around the elbow, such as heavy lifting, plumbers, painters, carpenters, butchers and decorating. The main symptom is pain about 1 to 2 cm down from the bony part on the outside of the elbow. Pain can also spread into your forearm and wrist. Tennis elbow is caused by repeated contraction of the forearm muscles that you use to straighten and raise your hand and wrist. The repeated motions and stress to the tissue may result in a series of tiny tears in the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the bony prominence at the outside of your elbow. The goal of physical therapy for the management of tennis elbow is to reduce pain through rest, applying ice, increase strength, stretching of the forearm and wrist and use some modalities such as ultrasound therapy, electrotherapy, deep tissue massage.

Exercises that you can do to relief tennis elbow:
1. Wrist stretching: the arm is placed in front with the hand pointing down. Pull the hand towards the body. Hold for 10 sec and repeated 5 times
2. Isometric wrist extension: use your other hand or to resist movement. Forearm and palm facing downwards and supported if possible. Attempt to extend the wrist. Maintain the contraction for 5 seconds. Rest and repeat 10-15 times. There should not be any movement at the wrist joint.
3. Finger extension: move your fingers away from each other. Repeat this 10-20 times.
4. Dynamic wrist extension: Move the wrist from flexion to extension, use a light weight (about 1 kg) for resistance. Start with 1 set of 10 repetitions daily and build up gradually up to 3 sets of 20 repetitions.
