How painful does it get during a hair transplant procedure?

During consultations, a frequently asked question is whether or not the procedure is painful. The answer to that is: “It is not painful”.

At the start of the procedure, the patient is given a local anaesthetic via an injection. The patient normally feels a needle prick pain, it stings a little for a few seconds when the anaesthetic is being administered. That is the only pain that can be felt during a hair transplant procedure. The patient won't be able to feel any pain after having a local anaesthetic, although they may still feel some pressure or movement.

It normally only takes a few minutes to lose feeling in the area where a local anaesthetic is given. Full sensation should return a few hours later, when the medication has worn off.

Unlike general anaesthetics, local anaesthetics don't cause you to lose consciousness. This means they're generally safer, don't normally require any special preparation before they can be used, and you can recover from them more quickly.
