TINY DHARMA HOTEL
Here is what the first “Tiny Dharma Hotel”, “Tiny Dharma Meditation Center” and it “Tiny Beach” for a New Way of Living is about.
In September 2015 I had to experience a Vipassana Retreat here in Bali. It is a 10 days silent retreat where you meditate from a minimum of 3 hours to a maximum of 9 hours if you follow all the sessions. Every day you will find yourself waking up at 4am, you will enjoy 2 vegetarian meals (breakfast and lunch), a fruit platter at 6pm (for the beginners) and an invitation to go sleep at 9pm.
During the first 3 days you will focus your attention on your breath and concentrate in this small area of your nose, from its top to bottom. Perceiving those nasal sensations getting sharper and sharper, this will not only allow you to release how much your thoughts are acting like monkeys, going everywhere, but you will be able to concentrate more and more to reach a certain balance in your mind. Being less and less distracted you will not only think but also see more clear. Trust me, this is already a great experience to do. Then and for the rest of the 7 days you may practice Vipassana. So what is Vipassana ? Vipassana is a simple technique of meditation witch consists in observing your body’s reactions.. Vipassana means, “see the thing as they really are”. From the top of your head to the bottom of your toes you will continuously observe your body’s reactions. But what does that bring you? Observing your body’s reactions, in a meditation posture, will make you release that some areas of your body brings you some good sensations, whilst other sensations are more close to pain. Previously and understanding the universal law of nature (a tree rises one day - this same tree dies another) you may start to understand that those good and less good sensations (just like that tree) will rise and will die at some point.
This is Vipassana. A simple but beautiful mental technique of meditation which allows you to not only reconnect with the universe, but and just watching at them, enables you to be less and less affected by your own reactions, habits, some of which have been stuck in us since a very long time.. Let’s call them our own “miseries”, and through Vipassana, you may start to clean yourself, in other words, be yourself! Learning how to practice Vipassana is one thing, whilst experimenting a Vipassana Retreat is another. Every single person will experiment it differently (that makes sense), but, a more or less strong move could happen in all us, a possible new way of living on being more conscious about what does really affect you, what makes you less open, less happy, less strong. Whatever good or bad sensations and so habits of yours, practicing this simple technique of meditation will allow you to let it go on being less affected by those miseries. Finally, you will be able to concentrate in your inner love, the one who has always been in you and since you are born, your inner truth. This is exactly what Vipassana did to me. I had to open myself to find back my inner love, strongly, just as much as I had to forget about being spiritual in my life before. Later and when I had to learn how to master it, in other words how to be less and less affected by my own misery and being more and more able to let it go, the beautiful things who have always been around me appeared again. Finally and being more aware, I could just let those beautiful things influence my choices but become more spiritual.
