Industrial fructose (added sugar, table sugar, and high fructose corn syrup) is associated with declining liver function and hypertension. Additionally, industrial fructose may impact body weight, blood pressure, insulin levels, and lipid levels.

On the other-hand, fructose found naturally in fruit is packaged with other nutrients (e.g., fiber) and antioxidants, which may help to explain why when people eat fruit they experience positive health benefits. For example, adding berries to a meal can help blunt an insulin spike from high glycemic foods. Fiber in fruit can help slow the release of the sugar and fruit phytonutrients can help inhibit the transportation of sugar into our intestinal walls and into the blood stream.

Cutting down on sugary foods may be easier said than done, but it’s worth it for our health. Learning to use fruit as sweeteners, such as date paste, dates, or ripe bananas for maple syrup or table sugar, is one way to add in more fruit while also lowering the amount of added sugars in our diet. At first recipes may not seem so sweet, but within a few weeks, your taste buds will adjust.

We used to just know fiber for its role in bulking up stool and improving regular bowl movements. However, our understanding of fiber has expanded. Gut flora digest fiber and make short chain fatty acids out of it. The short chain fatty acids have a number of health promoting effects, such as inhibiting the growth of bad bacteria, increasing mineral absorption (specifically, calcium absorption), improving insulin sensitivity, and lower colon cancer risk.

While fiber has a number of health benefits, some of the effects associated with the intake of dietary fiber in plants may actually be due to the presence of these polyphenols, a class of phytonutrients. So it's not enough to just add a fiber supplement to juice -we lose out on the benefits of eating the whole fruit.
