Spacious Yoga - Mysore Style Ashtanga with Iain Grysak Mysore style Ashtanga practice, workshops and Immersion courses in Ubud, Bali with Iain Grysak

Spacious Yoga honors and utilizes the structure of the traditional Mysore method of Ashtanga Yoga practice. Workshops and longer courses on themes around the energetic and physical alignment of body and breath in asana and pranayama, as well as Yoga philosophy and lifestyle are used to supplement and deepen a daily Mysore style practice. The context of the physical practice is inspired by and embe

dded in the Buddha’s investigations of the nature of the interaction of mind and matter. The practice is transmitted in a way that attempts to be non-authoritarian. I am deeply inspired by the ideas of Joel Kramer and Diana Alstad in this respect. Structure and authority are inherent and necessary in any formalized course of teaching. However, I teach the practice in a way that places the overall well being of the student above the maintenance of any physical or philosophical ideology. I encourage practitioners to use the practice in a way that builds self-trust, independence and acceptance – hence true freedom – rather than self-mistrust, dependency and measuring oneself against an unobtainable ideal – and hence bondage to an authoritarian hierarchy (whether internal or external). This paradigm of practice is a work in progress and will evolve and adapt to changing conditions and ideas over time.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Jamie Henderson Yoga on his podcast yesterday. We discussed what I consider to be some of the most salient and important issues within the Ashtanga yoga realm: Self sovereignty and the student - teacher relationship. We also extrapolate how these dynamics are reflected in the alarming shifts in macro level social organization structures and attitudes in so called Western democracies.

I've been quite reclusive over the past few years and it was enjoyable to come out and have a public discussion with Jamie, whose views and interests have always resonated with me.

Due to upcoming renovations at The Seeds of Life, our shala will relocate to Gayatri on April 1. Gayatri is a short distance away from the Seeds of Life in Ubud.

Our Mysore program at The Seeds of Life began in April 2014, and we haven't missed a single day of practice in 11 years since then. Thousands of practitioners from all across the world have contributed to cultivating the energy of our space and it is certainly with some reluctance and sadness that we accept the closing of this chapter. The Seeds of Life has been a home for us, and for many of our regular practitioners. We maintain a close relationship with Ben Richards and the Seeds of Life and we fully support the evolution of both the cafe and our Mysore program and the necessary changes that this entails. We have deep gratitude to Ben for having the vision to host a Mysore program as a complement to the deeply nourishing food that he creates and for his unwavering support of the program over the years. We would also like to thank the staff at Seeds of Life and all of the practitioners who have breathed and sweated with us!

We also feel extremely fortunate and are excited to have found a beautiful new shala in Ubud. Gayatri is located in the heart of Ubud, yet its grounds offer a serene and peaceful respite from the buzzing energy of our bustling little town. The owner of Gayatri, Bagus Ari Saputra, was among the first practitioners at our shala in 2014. Bagus recently had a beautiful bamboo yoga shala built on the grounds of Gayatri and we feel honoured to call this architectural masterpiece our new home. Aside from being beautiful, the shala also boasts a larger floor space and should be more comfortable for practitioners during busy times. Gayatri also offers comfortable and quiet accomodation for those who wish to stay on site. We look forward to filling this shala with full power Mysore style energy!

For 7 years, from 2007 to 2013, my routine was to practice with Rolf & Marci in Goa for 4 - 5 months, followed by a long Vipassana retreat, before returning to my then home of the Yukon in Northern Canada for the other half of the year. None of the people or places from that time are a part of my life anymore, so it all feels long ago and far away, like a distant dream of another life. But, like all of life's experiences, its influence on who and what I am today remains embedded deeply within me.

Rolf was the cornerstone and anchor of that phase of my life and I can't imagine how I would be right now if he had not played that role during those years. This past week, and especially today, I have felt a sad nostalgia for that time, as well as deep gratitude. In my practice the past few mornings, I felt Rolf's presence deeply, especially in one of the postures that we always worked on together. Today, I just feel the purity and love of his quality of being. Be free Rolf. Thank you for sharing yourself so openly with us during your time here among us. Your influence will always remain with me ❤

I was a guest on Jamie Henderson's podcast again a week or so ago. We discussed the work of Iain McGilchrist and his theory of the relationship between the two hemispheres of the brain, and how this relates to our yoga practice and general societal trends.

In this episode i am joined once again by Iain Grysak where we discuss yoga practice in relation to Iain McGilchrists work on the hemisphere's of the brain. It's always a pleasure to talk with Iain and especially on this topic of bringing about balance within the body, relevant to McGilchrist's work...
