Understanding the importance of digestion in Chinese thinking

Within minutes of being born we are fed. Adequate nourishment every day means we grow, we walk, talk, run, we learn, we fight infections and in essence live life because we have the energy to do so. We know the diet plays an important role, but, it is the actual process within the body that ultimately reflects our vitality. So when stomach or digestive issues arise, life becomes uncomfortable and in some cases detrimental. We cannot survive without quality nourishment and of equal importance is the distribution of this nourishment throughout our bodies. Acupuncture is particularly adept at treating stomach and digestive disorders. Why?

In Chinese medical thinking, we say we are nourishing our ‘Post heaven Qi’. The use of the word heaven reflects the understanding of the pivotal role our stomachs and spleen are for the vitality of life. We think that the Stomach and the Spleen are the harvesters of the daily qi required for growth, defence, temperature regulation, reproduction and so forth. Every organ in the body relies on the distribution of the qi derived from the digestive function of the stomach and spleen.

Essentially this means that any disruption to the spleen and stomach affects all other organ systems and thus the entire body. For example, the Spleen in Chinese thinking distributes and aids in the refinement of the qi received from the stomach into the various different sub types of qi required for the body, such as our defence system known as ‘wei qi’, or in western thinking, the immune system. Interestingly in Western physiology the function of the spleen is for the immune system. So if you are suffering from acid reflux or a peptic ulcer, you are not nourishing your body in a vital deeper way you need. The Chinese thinking goes further than this.

Collectively the Stomach and Spleen or ‘middle jiao’ incorporate all functional issues of the gastro-intestinal system which would include in western biomedical thinking functional issues for the stomach, the pancreas, liver, gall-bladder, small and large intestines. This also extends as far as the distribution of nutrients by the circulatory system. With such an extensive range of effects then this means that acupuncture can positively affect each of these areas in the body. So how do we do this? Individual assessments are made as believe it or not one peptic ulcer is not the same as another peptic ulcer. Why?

Because the effects of life, stress, worry, or other emotional issues are also taken into account. We have all had that butterfly in the stomach while awaiting news, or paced up and down through worry and not been able to eat. So we know that the stomach can be affected by our emotions and lets face it our stress. We also know through western investigative procedures, that functional issues such as peptic ulcers are diagnosed with the advice of not being too stressed. The beauty of acupuncture is we can help the overall individual and not just the actual complaint. Now, the kind of conditions most commonly seen are

Epigastric Pain
Abdominal Pain and distension
Acid Reflux
Peptic Ulcer
Anorexia – loss of appetite
Constipation / Diarrhoea
Indigestion
Nausea / Vomiting
Regurgitation

And much more…..

Now in a world such as ours, with the growth of health food shops, organic vegetables, weight-watchers products and a conscious awareness of health beauty and vitality, we want our bodies to work, to live longer with our faculties intact. As said before, we know the diet plays an important role, but, it is the actual process within the body that ultimately reflects our vitality. This starts with the stomach and spleen, a factor the Chinese people recognised thousands of years ago. It also means that you do not have to have ‘an issue’ just to have acupuncture as our health is reflected in our qi, which is derived daily from the ‘transformation and transportation’ or ‘digestion and distribution of qi.

Getting fit, staying fit, can be quite a challenge for most of us. Our bodies are designed to move through the use of muscle, bone and nervous system. But, when an injury occurs it can cause all sorts of issues. Swelling, pain and inflammation being the most common presenting symptoms. These can be treated not just effectively but quickly, thus reducing the length of time spent in recovery. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a muscle or bone injury, Acupuncture excels in this area. Handed down via the martial arts system, there is a comprehensive and impressive knowledge base that has been proven over eons. What’s beautiful about acupuncture is it’s all inclusive, so if you’re not healing correctly because you have for example diabetes or another compounding issue, that can be treated too. The icing on the cake though is the practice of acupuncture in prevention of injuries. It’s a win win!

saying ‘you are what you eat’ has some truth, yet why is it if we change our dietary habits, take supplements and exercise it quite often is not enough to remedy a digestive disorder that has occurred. Over the counter products are easily available to aid us in some of the immediate acute problems such as vomiting and diarrhoea, but long term issues such as chronic constipation, ulcerative colitis or stomach ulcers are not so easily helped in this way. In fact, a recent study published in October 2014, referred to by the United European Gastroenterology (UEG), shows that digestive disorders affect over one quarter of Europe and our ability to go to work2,3. The question is, can we as acupuncturists help? Yes we can.

The pathophysiology of digestive disorders in Chinese medicine known as ‘yun bua’1 is long written about and more recently studied in several areas by means of clinical trials. In fact, the World Health Organisation (WHO) have specifically reviewed, analysed and reported upon the valuable and comparable support and relief acupuncture provides for common gastroenterological symptoms across many disorders4.

For example, epigastric pain – a common symptom experienced in stomach disorders such as peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis and gastric spasm. Acupuncture provides satisfactory relief, in fact ‘better ’relief than injections using morphine and atropine4. For gastric spasm, acupuncture is comparable to the drug Domperidone4.

Nausea and vomiting which may present in generalised conditions such as morning sickness, postoperative vomiting and nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, is relieved by receiving acupuncture specifically at point PC6 by having an ‘antiemetic’ effect. Consistent results across several clinical trials involving over 2000 patients support this completely4. Irritable Colon syndrome / Irritable bowel syndrome and chronic ulcerative colitis shows’ that acupuncture is an alternative therapeutic measure for people to undertake4. The use of acupuncture for relief of pain and discomfort during a colonoscopy process is similar to the pain relieving drug pethidine with the benefit of far less side effects4. The extensive data available showing the positive effects of acupuncture upon the digestive system, including acid secretion, motility, pain, gastric spasm and much more is vast. It also includes and advocates the use of acupuncture in chronic cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation) even if there is an acute exacerbation
Acupuncture can support so many people in many ways.

Bio energy acupuncture. Bio Energy means life force energy⚡. When you come for a visit we look for any in balance you may experience. this will help us with your natural healing mechanism that is governed within the over all self. The body is one of the most complex mechanisms, at same time can produce most miraculous healing and transformation.

What do we look for with imbalance. Excess, deficencey, stagnation, blockages, sedation, tonification,

chi and essence.

Chi is energy that passes through the body. It can be siad to be like energy it supports the blood and movement within and without. We look for this through a channels and meridians system that are mapped throughout the body .

A treatment:

First we assess your imbalances asking some questions. And tongue diagnosis amd pulse It gives us indications as to what is wrong in your energy system. A client may have a host of symptoms when they walk into the clinic and we will address these issues. we will also investigate the root of the problem which may be causing the symptoms. By treating root of the problem we will be able reduce the symptoms. As we see, the symptoms as the branch.

We see each client from holistic point of view.
Each client is completely different to the next client even though at times their symptoms might look the same they most often have different roots to their presenting complaint. with different imbalances for each client.

How does Acupuncture work?

The easiest way I can explain is by example for instance a patient presents with pain and inflammation at the knee. The body is made up of channels that allow the flow of energy or chi through the body. acupuncture points along these channels, releasing, block energy stagnation, inflamation from the clients knee .

we use moxa, heat, acupuncture, or seeds and magnets. These stimulate your energy system releasing block energy bringing over all balance and harmony

In addition we support the clients full recovery and journey back to full health.

How long is a treatment?

An individual treatment can take from 25 to 35 minutes depending on the nature of the presenting issue. The cost of a treatment between 50 euros and 65 euros

we treat way beyond the list.

Anxiety stress sadness grief depression Back pain arm pain leg pain
foot pain hand pain Headaches fatigue insomnia nausea vomiting allergies
Vision tinnitus hormonal anger Toothache sinus tmj pain cough
Chest pain cancer sore throat gout
Sport injuries bladder and kidney infections.
This list is endless

If you need help with anything give bio energy acupuncture a call. we will do our best to help you and get you going in the right direction to good health and wellbeing.

Acupuncture is a gentle medical system that is used to treat illness and prevent disease and promote well being. Chinese medicine seeks to treat the whole person. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine pre sterilsed disposable needles at specific points on the body’s surface to help restore health physical and psychological and emotional well being. Acupuncture originates in China and has been practiced for over 3000 years; Acupuncture is recognised by the World Health Organisation as the second most wildly used system of healthcare alongside Western Medicine and has proven to benefit the overall health of the mind, body and spirit. Most people describe their acupuncture treatment as calming and relaxing. Many people find when they start an acupuncture treatment they experience positive changes in their overall state of health. They find that they sleep better, feel more relaxed and have a more positive outlook. Since each person is unique the number of treatments required will vary. For instance chronic long term conditions can take longer to treat than acute conditions that have just occurred and if a person is in general good health their recovery may be quicker. Also the frequency of treatments will have an impact; initially treatments should administered close together and then become less frequent as the condition improves. A full treatment program will be discussed with each client. After the treatment most people would describe the treatment as calm and relaxing but from time to time some clients can experience what is known as healing crisis - this can also been seen as a positive result that the body is responding to treatment. Bio Energy Acupuncture offers all clients a full aftercare service. Bio energy acupuncture is on hand and will help and support by suggesting to all clients an aftercare treatment plan with take home self help exercises including meditation, qi gong and sacred bio energy yoga. Payment is fifty euro for first session. When booking for a number of session’s payment will be discounted and discussed with the client to make treatments affordable for clients to attend and receive continual bio energy acupuncture treatments.
