Additionally, magnesium has been shown to increase levels of the neurotransmitter GABA, which also promotes relaxation and helps quiet the mind. Low levels of magnesium have been linked to insomnia and restless sleep, so ensuring adequate magnesium intake through diet or supplements may improve sleep quality. People who consumed more than 550 mg of magnesium per day (vs. 350 mg) had less age-related brain shrinkage. A higher intake of magnesium in our diets from a younger age may protect against neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline by the time we reach our 40s.
