In this issue, we celebrate inspiring stories of creativity and community pride. From Michael Reilly’s journey to shaping European sports policy, to youth tackling mental health stigma, and Wicklow’s ‘Born to Shine, Traveller Threads’ empowering young designers, we showcase Traveller Pride Week highlights nationwide.
We are delighted to feature Longford’s Michael Reilly on the cover of this issue. Michael’s journey from feeling unseen in school to influencing European policy shows the power of persistence and community. Now Social Innovation Officer with Longford Sports Partnership, he champions Traveller and Roma inclusion in sport, challenges stereotypes, and builds trust through grassroots engagement. His message to young Travellers: forge your own path, believe in your worth, and aim high.
The No Shame Campaign’s second National Youth Mental Health Conference, held in Athlone, brought nearly 100 attendees together to address stigma and promote online empathy among young Travellers. Through workshops, poetry, and panel discussions, participants explored mental health challenges, challenged harmful beliefs, and built tools for compassion, resilience, and community-led change, reinforcing that mental health struggles are nothing to hide.
As part of Traveller Pride, Wicklow Traveller Group’s ‘Born to Shine – Traveller Threads’ empowered young Travellers to design clothes, build sustainable garden furniture, and showcase their creativity in a safe, supportive space. Led by Nelly and Jim O’Brien, the project celebrated style, sustainability, and heritage while boosting confidence. It also challenged stereotypes, proving the talent and potential of Traveller youth, and inspiring future creative collaborations.
