Today is
And the theme this year is “Global solidarity, shared responsibility”

Admittedly, progression and advancement of HIV treatment in recent years has shown that people today living with a HIV diagnosis now have a normal life expectancy. Effective HIV treatment and maintaining an undetectable viral load means an individual to their partner.

Yet whilst this has been a tough year for everyone - and despite such advances in treatment - 2020 has been especially psychologically strenuous for many living with, or affected by, HIV (e.g. isolation; challenges in accessing health care; thus potentially increasing vulnerability).

From my work at the St James's Hospital Dublin I continue to witness individuals experiencing stigma and self-stigma around HIV. A factor contributing to this is the misinformation amongst society with regards to HIV and how it's transmitted, which can potentially prevent people from accessing services. We can however, normalise HIV testing and tackle HIV stigma:

U=U (undetectable = untransmittable)

In other words, someone who is on effective treatment for HIV cannot pass it on through sexual in*******se.

If you - or a loved one - are affected by HIV and feel the need for counselling support, reach out for that assistance, acceptance, empathy and non-judgment that you deserve.
Don’t suffer in isolation.

One of the ways I look after my well-being is walking - be that with my dogs, with others or sometimes just alone! I find that getting out in nature and bracing the elements helps blow away the cobwebs!

Walking is found to improve self-perception, self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and it can reduce stress, anxiety and fatigue.
Best of all...it's free!

During the winter months and the current COVID level 5 restrictions, how are you managing your mental and psychological well-being?

November or Movember is traditionally a month to acknowledge men’s health. Physical, but also mental health & su***de prevention. Globally, on average one man dies by su***de every minute of the day. If YOU are suffering, or if you feel another man is, reach out for that support. No man (or indeed any individual) is an island

Today is ! Yes...Friday 13th!!

It's been said that wherever there's human need, there's an opportunity for kindness and to make a difference. One kind word can potentially make someone's day. And in the current lockdown, perhaps we also need to look inward and show ourselves that kindness and self-compassion too.

Kindness begins with an understanding that we all struggle. It's giving hope to those who feel alone in the world.
What act of kindness however will you do for yourself today?

If you feel that you're currently struggling, reach out and get the support you deserve.

Some people consider November as a month for remembering our deceased loved ones. But grief affects us at any time.
It can come in waves & often hits us without any warning. Grief can be messy, confusing & impacts everyone differently.

If you’re experiencing grief & loss, be gentle with yourself, give yourself permission to take things a little easier & allow yourself to experience the feelings & emotions that come with bereavement.

Sometimes talking to someone independent can help. Don't be afraid to reach out for that support.
