Irish Osteoporosis Society The Irish Osteoporosis Society is a charity dedicated to reducing the incidence of Osteoporosis and promoting bone health. These activities include:

The IOS provides information on all aspects of the disease and offers support to people with Osteoporosis in Ireland. The Irish Osteoporosis Society is a charitable organisation and as such relies on our members’ generosity and support to continue our activities. Helpline – The IOS operates a Patient Support Helpline throughout the year. The Helpline is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

ress and Advertising – The IOS regularly issues press releases and drafts articles on Osteoporosis for the general media and the medical press. The Society also runs advertising campaigns to promote awareness certain events.

3. Literature & Promotional Materials

The IOS distributes Osteoporosis information (leaflets, books, posters etc.) to Society members, members of the public, GPs, nurses, physiotherapists, other health professionals, HSE staff, clinics etc. These include:

* “A Guide To Osteoporosis”
* “Osteoporosis: Weight bearing exercise and bone health”
* “Maintaining Bone Health Through Diet”

4. Website – the IOS website is a comprehensive source of information for both the public and health professionals

5. Newsletter – We produce an informative and up to date members’ newsletter which is distributed nationwide twice yearly – Spring and Autumn.

6. Public Lectures – Our Health Promotion Officer delivers Osteoporosis information seminars in locations around the country throughout the year. These include senior citizens groups, community groups, women’s groups (e.g. ICA) pharmacies, schools, and the ‘Over Fifties Shows’ (Dublin Cork and Galway) among others.

7. Schools Information DVD / Workbook – We have produced an Osteoporosis / bone health information DVD targeted at secondary school pupils along with an accompanying workbook for schools.

8. Awareness Groups – In order to educate and inform people around the country, the IOS has begun the process of establishing a national network of Osteoporosis awareness groups. If you would be interested in becoming part of a regional awareness group, please click here.

9. Annual Conference – The IOS hosts an international medical conference on Osteoporosis (for health professionals) each year with high-profile speakers from Ireland and around the world.

10. Patient Representation to Government – The IOS regularly meets with the Department of Health, the HSE, government ministers and other TDs to discuss policy relating to Osteoporosis and to brief them on issues and requirements in the treatment of the disease.
