🧠𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐃𝐇𝐃: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬
Gabor Maté, a renowned physician, offers a thought-provoking perspective on ADHD. Rather than viewing it solely as a genetic or neurobiological disorder, he believes ADHD often forms as a response to early childhood experiences—particularly those involving emotional stress, trauma, and insecure attachment.
According to Maté, when children grow up in environments marked by high stress or inconsistent emotional support, their developing brains may adapt in ways that manifest as ADHD symptoms. These behaviours—hyperactivity, inattention, impulsiveness—can be seen as coping mechanisms, shaped by the need to manage overwhelming emotional stress.
But here's the good news: by understanding the root causes, we can take proactive steps to support healthier development in children, and even address some of these patterns in ourselves as adults. 💪

𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: Cultivating self-awareness helps both parents and children understand and manage their emotions better. Mindfulness practices, journaling, coaching and therapy can be powerful tools in this journey, enabling us to break cycles of stress and reactivity.
𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Investing in personal growth can transform how we relate to ourselves and others. This includes developing emotional intelligence, stress management skills, and building healthy, supportive relationships.
𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚-𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞: Recognising and addressing unresolved trauma is key. Whether through therapy, coaching, or support groups, healing past wounds can lead to profound changes in behaviour and emotional well-being.
𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Whether at home, in schools, or in the workplace, fostering environments that reduce stress and promote emotional safety can significantly impact attention, focus, and overall mental health.
By integrating these things, we can move beyond symptom management and address the deeper causes of ADHD, leading to more fulfilling and balanced lives for both children and adults.
