The thyroid cannot function without MAGNESIUM! 💯⠀
⠀
Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid condition) are becoming increasingly common.
Symptoms can include, fatigue, dry skin, constipation, weight gain, depression, joint pain etc. ⠀
This mineral is one of the most important, and often times deficient nutrients, for those with Hashimoto's.
⠀
Supplements like iodine, selenium, zinc, tyrosine etc. for the thyroid are also beneficial. One nutrient that often gets overlooked is MAGNESIUM.⠀
⠀
Some important functions of Magnesium when it comes to our thyroid gland health:⠀
⠀
💠Magnesium helps to make more T4 in the thyroid gland and without this mineral many of the thyroid enzymes simply could not function.⠀
⠀
💠Magnesium is responsible for converting the inactive T4 into the active T3. This becomes really important because the metabolism of your body cells are enhanced by T3 and not the inactive T4.⠀
⠀
💠Magnesium deficiency can also be related to an enlarged thyroid gland (among other things).⠀
⠀
Magnesium supports adrenal function which is another area that is often compromised for those individuals with a thyroid issue. ⠀
⠀
Research has shown that Magnesium deficiency can have a direct impact on thyroid function. What was also shown was that physical and psychological stress led to the depletion of Magnesium, which is needed for iodine utilization by the thyroid gland. PMID: 17984925⠀
⠀
Wang et al. (study) found that a Magnesium deficiency is associated with an increased risk of hypothyroidism and thyroid autoimmunity. PMID: 29967483⠀
⠀
Other things to include when dealing with hypothyroidism or any autoimmune condition include optimizing gut health, stress reduction, antioxidants & addressing diet and lifestyle factors. It's never just based on one thing! ⠀⠀
